Based on the latest remarks, it’s clear that Digital Eclipse’s eagerly awaited collection, Mortal Kombat Legacy Kollection, won’t feature any games from the PS2 era.
There will, however, be Mortal Kombat Mythologies: Sub-Zero and Mortal Kombat: Special Forces.
What’s important about these two titles is neither is a fighting game in the traditional sense.
Revisiting MK Mythologies: In 1997, Sub-Zero debuted on PlayStation, deviating from the usual Mortal Kombat fighting style with a side-scrolling format, borrowing elements from its source of inspiration. However, it’s often criticized as one of the weaker entries in the Mortal Kombat series. The N64 version was available too, but in this collection, we anticipate the PlayStation edition to be included.
2000’s MK: Special Forces offers an unconventional gaming experience, placing you as Jax in a combat scenario that feels like a third-person action brawler. Despite its age, we find it holds up somewhat well, although it may appear quite rudimentary compared to contemporary games.
Although the official titles for the compilation haven’t been revealed as of yet, footage captured unofficially at Atari’s Gamescom booth suggests that they have been confirmed.
The standout exception, if Digital Eclipse truly doesn’t plan to include PS2 games, is likely Mortal Kombat Gold. This was essentially an update of Mortal Kombat 4, released for the Dreamcast in 1999. Critics weren’t kind to it at first, but the competition was tough: Namco’s SoulCalibur stole the show that year, making it a fight Mortal Kombat Gold never had a chance against.
Just to recap, then, here’s the full lineup so far:
