Prepare to be Hung Up Over This Look Back at the 2006 Grammys

The stars may be looking back on 2016, but 2006 will forever be iconic.

Oh my god, the 2006 Grammys! I seriously can’t get that night out of my head. It started SO strong – Madonna came out with Gorillaz and De La Soul, and they did this incredible mix of “Feel Good Inc.” and “Hung Up”! The energy was just insane, it was the perfect way to kick things off. I still replay it in my head constantly!

The award show, which didn’t have a traditional host, featured many unforgettable highlights, including a captivating performance of “We Belong Together” by Mariah Carey. Carey, nicknamed the “Songbird Supreme,” was visibly moved after winning three Grammy Awards, one of which was for Best Contemporary R&B Album.

U2 had an incredible night, arguably the best of anyone at the awards. The iconic Irish rock band—featuring Bono, The Edge, Adam Clayton, and Larry Mullen Jr.—won all five of their nominations, including the coveted Album of the Year award for How to Dismantle an Atomic Bomb. They also thrilled the crowd with a powerful performance of their popular song, “Vertigo.”

The awards ceremony featured a strong dose of mid-2000s style, with appearances by stars like Paula Abdul, Fergie, and Kanye West.

Gwen Stefani, while pregnant with her first child, Kingston, and married to Gavin Rossdale, showcased her style in a flowing, earth-toned dress. Beyoncé and her Destiny’s Child bandmates, Kelly Rowland and Michelle Williams, dazzled in silver and gold gowns as they presented the Song of the Year award.

The Grammy Awards were a big night for several artists. Kelly Clarkson won her first two Grammys, including one for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance for her hit song “Since U Been Gone.” John Legend also had a breakthrough evening, taking home three Grammys and being named Best New Artist. He also performed at the Grammys for the first time, joining Ciara, Maroon 5, and others in a special tribute to Sly and the Family Stone, with the original band members participating.

Throughout the evening, several other famous musicians performed, including Bruce Springsteen and Sam Moore. They closed the show with a heartfelt tribute to New Orleans, remembering the devastation caused by Hurricane Katrina just months before. Joined by New Orleans singers like Irma Thomas, their performance of “In the Midnight Hour” also honored soul legend Wilson Pickett, who had passed away in January 2006.
