‘Pretty Awesome, Huh?’: Even the Father of Final Fantasy Can’t Avoid AI Drama

Okay, so Hironobu Sakaguchi – the guy who basically made Final Fantasy – is getting pulled into this whole AI debate online. It’s kinda wild to see him in the middle of it all, honestly.

It all started when Hironobu Sakaguchi, the creator of Final Fantasy, reacted to an AI-created video on X (formerly Twitter). The video was gaining attention from Japanese fans of the series, as it imagined what a modern remake of Final Fantasy 6 might look like.

Like many AI-created videos, this one looks good at first, but if you watch closely, you’ll notice a lot of strange mistakes. Faces distort and shift, clothing lacks detail and looks messy, and the backgrounds are full of things that don’t quite fit together.

And of course, the art direction is generally just all over the place.

Despite the issues, Sakaguchi still enjoyed the video, exclaiming, “Wow, this is amazing!”

His optimistic attitude has annoyed some people, but it’s also motivated supporters of AI-created content to strongly defend the technology.

The responses have been quite chaotic, but one is really standing out – a message from Akitoshi Kawazu, a long-time game developer and the creator of the SaGa series.

Kawazu politely disagreed with Sakaguchi, asking him to stop praising the video after just one compliment. He didn’t fully share Sakaguchi’s enthusiastic opinion that it was “pretty awesome.”

I actually sympathize with Sakaguchi. I don’t think he meant to start a fight on social media. He likely just thought a fan creation was neat, quickly responded, and moved on.

This situation highlights how common AI-created content is becoming. If someone like Sakaguchi can be impressed by it, most people online likely won’t question its authenticity at all.
