Primal Creator Breaks Silence on Shocking Season 3 Finale & Teases Future Plans (Exclusive)

The latest season of Primal just finished with a surprising twist, and the show’s creator has shared what this means for the series’ future. Genndy Tartakovsky’s Primal has become a critically acclaimed original animated series on Adult Swim, especially after the second season shocked viewers by killing off the main character, Spear. However, Season 3 took things even further by unexpectedly bringing Spear back to life as a zombie for a brand new storyline.

Season 3 of Primal has been full of surprises, and the finale is no exception. It feels like a more definitive ending than Season 2, suggesting creator Genndy Tartakovsky is wrapping up Spear and Fang’s story. In an interview with ComicBook, Tartakovsky hinted at future seasons potentially being an anthology series, stating he feels this ending is as conclusive as the one for Season 2.

Primal Season 3 Finale Ties It Back Into Season 2

The ending of Primal Season 3 surprisingly takes place before the final scene of Season 2. Although Spear died at the end of Season 2, he was revived by the black elixir and got to witness his daughter’s growth, continuing his lineage. Creator Genndy Tartakovsky enjoyed bringing the story full circle with this happy ending, saying it was “really nice.” He hopes fans were pleasantly surprised by how the seasons connect.

Tartakovsky explained that many viewers felt a mix of sadness and fondness when the second season concluded. He personally enjoys endings that aren’t entirely happy, preferring a bittersweet tone. He hopes audiences will be pleasantly surprised by how things resolve. Now that Spear and Fang’s journey is complete, Tartakovsky is planning to transform Primal into a series of standalone stories, each with a new focus.

Will Primal Continue With Season 4?

When asked if Primal might return for another season, Genndy Tartakovsky explained he still envisions the show as an anthology series, much like he discussed at the end of Season 2. He feels the story is complete, just as Season 2 felt conclusive. However, he’s firmly against continuing the story with Spear’s daughter as the focus. Tartakovsky compared it to the Mad Max franchise, where the introduction of ‘Lost Kids’ diminished the original’s impact, and he wants to avoid a similar loss of intensity for Primal.

Growing up, I had a certain feeling I didn’t like, and I’ve always wanted to avoid that. Despite that personal goal, Genndy Tartakovsky hopes Primal can continue for many seasons. He wants to keep creating new stories for the show as long as he’s able, and he’s open to introducing new characters who could eventually take over from Spear and Fang, while still maintaining the same quality but with a fresh perspective.

It looks like if Primal comes back for another season, it will be a completely new story. You can currently watch all episodes of Primal Season 3 on HBO Max. What are your thoughts? Share them in the comments and join the discussion on the ComicBook Forum!
