Let’s be real, Ryan Reynolds is a huge draw in Hollywood – when he’s on, he’s on. But even big stars have missteps. We all know about his successes like Deadpool and Free Guy, which were both critical and commercial hits. However, digging a little deeper, you find some films that just didn’t connect with audiences. I recently stumbled across one of those – a sci-fi action movie from 2015 that pretty much vanished from memory – and it’s now available to stream on Prime Video.
Following the success of Woman in Gold, Ryan Reynolds starred in the sci-fi thriller Self/less, but it didn’t perform well in theaters. Directed by Tarsem Singh and also featuring Natalie Martinez, Matthew Goode, and Ben Kingsley, the film earned only $31 million worldwide—not enough to cover its production costs. Critics and audiences weren’t impressed, and it currently streams on Prime Video. While not Reynolds’ worst-reviewed film—that title belongs to R.I.P.D.—Self/less holds a low 18% score on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of his most critically panned movies.
Ryan Reynold’s Self/less Is a Fun Body-Swapping Sci-Fi Action Thriller
Despite poor box office results and a lackluster audience score of 46%, Self/less is a surprisingly enjoyable action movie if you’re willing to watch it. The story follows Damian Hale, a wealthy and dying businessman who undergoes an experimental procedure to transfer his mind into a younger, healthier body. Starring Reynolds, the film quickly becomes a chase-filled conspiracy thriller as Damian uncovers secrets about the origins of his new body.
While not a masterpiece, Self/less is a surprisingly enjoyable action thriller. Despite receiving mostly negative reviews, it’s more entertaining than its critics suggest. The film explores interesting ideas about immortality and transferring consciousness, but doesn’t delve too deeply into them. Ryan Reynolds delivers a strong performance in one of his more serious roles, and the movie is packed with exciting action sequences. It’s not Reynolds’ best work, but it’s worth a watch if you’re looking for some mindless fun and go in without expecting too much.
What’s New on Prime Video?
