Prime Video’s 10/10 Action Franchise Makes Reacher Look Small

While Reacher is a strong action series, it doesn’t quite have the same broad, international feel as Prime Video’s other big action thrillers. Prime Video is known for its excellent action shows, including the Terminal List and Reacher. Reacher, starring Alan Ritchson and based on Lee Child’s novels, has been a huge success since it premiered in 2022, earning critical praise, attracting large audiences, and even leading to a spinoff series.

The show centers around Reacher, a wandering hero who travels across the US, uncovering and dismantling criminal operations – from trafficking rings to corrupt police forces – and delivering his own harsh form of justice. Because the show is so popular, it’s already been renewed for two more seasons, and with over 30 novels by Lee Child to draw from, it could potentially run for many years. Despite its success, however, the series still feels like something is lacking.

Jack Reacher stories usually stay within the United States, which keeps the focus local. Despite this, Lee Child has done an amazing job creating compelling narratives. The first season of Reacher takes place entirely in a small town, but it’s as exciting as any international thriller, much like Netflix’s Rebel Ridge. However, if you prefer your spy thrillers to move around the world, the Jack Ryan series on Prime Video might be a better choice.

Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan Has A Global Scope That Reacher Lacks

John Krasinski, known from The Office, stars as Jack Ryan, a CIA analyst who unexpectedly finds himself working in the field. Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan delivers classic action and suspense on a grander scale than Reacher. Unlike Reacher, which focuses on a single, character-driven story, Jack Ryan’s investigations take him all over the world – from Venezuela to the Czech Republic and beyond – as he chases down dangerous adversaries.

This Jack Ryan series feels more like Taylor Sheridan’s Lioness than the Reacher show. Unlike stories about a lone operative, Ryan consistently works with and depends on his CIA team and the agency as a whole. This allows the show to cover a much wider scope, following him on missions around the globe. In fact, it’s more internationally focused than even Harrison Ford’s Jack Ryan films from the 1990s.

Reacher’s Comparatively Small Scale Was A Welcome Change For The Action Genre

Although Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan is enjoyable, it’s easy to see why audiences were drawn to Reacher when it first appeared on Prime Video. A year later, the series Citadel tried to capture the same appeal as Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan but failed to impress viewers or critics, even with a large budget—likely because many other spy shows already offer similar globe-trotting adventures.

Action movies usually have larger budgets than TV shows, making them a better fit for complex, international stories. While Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan managed to overcome this limitation with significant funding, Reacher became popular because it offered something viewers hadn’t seen in a while: a classic action show about a skilled hero traveling from place to place to solve problems, similar to older series like The Incredible Hulk or The A-Team.

The show feels like a blend of police dramas, similar to Bosch, and spy thrillers like James Bond, which is a big reason why Reacher became so popular. While Tom Clancy’s Jack Ryan tells a large, sprawling story, Reacher focuses on a smaller, more personal plot, making the stakes feel higher and more urgent.
