Prime Video is preparing a new superhero series to follow up its popular show, The Boys. After five seasons, The Boys has finished its run. Though the ending wasn’t universally loved, many fans will miss seeing Antony Starr’s character on the Prime Video platform when the next season arrives.
Prime Video hasn’t produced a ton of massively popular original shows, but The Boys stands out as one of their biggest successes. While they’ve avoided major flops, beyond shows geared towards specific audiences like The Boys, Invincible, and Fallout, there isn’t a lot to draw in new viewers.
That’s where Spider-Noir fits in. The eight-episode series focuses on Ben Reilly (Nicolas Cage), who is also known as The Spider. This version of Spider-Man comes from another universe – similar to Spider-Man Noir as seen in the animated Spider-Verse films, and is again voiced by Nicolas Cage.
Even though this new Spider-Man is connected to the creators of Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse (Christopher Miller and Phil Lord), this version – Ben Reilly – is a different character than the one we saw in that film. It’s a bit confusing, but it’s due to the complicated ownership of the Spider-Man characters and stories.
This series centers on Ben Reilly, formerly Spider-Man, who is now a struggling private investigator in 1930s New York City. After a personal loss forced him to give up the Spider-Man role, he’s trying to build a new life, but a major case pulls him back into action. Expect a thrilling story – it’s a fantastic continuation of the world established in The Boys.
Spider-Noir Has Arrived At The Perfect Time Following The Boys Finale
The superhero genre lost a significant and unique voice on May 20, 2026, with the finale of The Boys. Regardless of your opinion on how the show ended, it undeniably challenged the overwhelmingly optimistic and traditional style of superhero stories we often see on TV and in films.
While Invincible remains a standout, there aren’t many other shows exploring the realistic challenges of being a superhero—how having powers wouldn’t automatically solve problems. Spider-Noir seems poised to fill that gap, offering a story that breaks away from typical superhero tropes.
Compared to typical superhero shows, The Boys was notably geared towards adults, and now that it’s finished, there’s an opening for another adult-focused superhero series. Spider-Noir seems well-suited to fill that gap, with its darker, more mature themes and its unique visual style – switching between color and black and white – which will likely appeal to older viewers.
The animated series Spider-Noir clearly aims for a more adult audience. This is evident in choices like renaming the hero ‘The Spider’ – a nod to classic comic serials like The Spirit and The Shadow. Even the hero’s name, Ben Reilly, was chosen instead of a version of Peter Parker to avoid a youthful feel, according to Esquire.
With The Boys concluding, a new superhero story, Spider-Noir, has the potential to attract fans looking for a darker, more unconventional take on heroes than what’s typically seen in Marvel and DC films. While it’s unclear if Spider-Noir will reach the same level of popularity as The Boys, it definitely has a strong foundation for success.
