Prime Video’s New Reboot of Hit 37-Year-Old TV Show Is an Instant U.S. Streaming Success

I’ve been so fascinated watching what Amazon’s been doing with the MGM library since the acquisition! They’re really digging through all those classic titles to find ones that could work as modern reboots, and it’s exciting to see it come to life. The new Road House was a fantastic start – Doug Liman really did a great job bringing that 80s classic back, and it was popular enough to earn a sequel! And there’s so much more coming! I’m especially looking forward to Michael B. Jordan’s take on The Thomas Crown Affair – he’s directing and starring, which is amazing. Plus, Mike Flanagan is tackling Carrie as a TV series, and it’s perfectly timed for Halloween. It feels like a whole new era of classic films being reimagined!

Prime Video launched another reboot this weekend, and it’s already gaining traction: the revival of American Gladiators. The show, a nostalgic return to the popular 90s series, premiered with three episodes on Friday and quickly rose to become the #4 most-watched TV show on Prime Video. It currently trails behind Young Sherlock (#3), Invincible (#2), and The Boys (#1). While it hasn’t immediately reached the top spot, landing at #4 is a solid start for the reboot.

American Gladiators Reboot Climbs the Prime Video Charts

The new series of American Gladiators, much like the original, features incredibly fit athletes competing against each other in challenges that test their strength, agility, and intelligence. WWE star The Miz hosts, and the show echoes the classic format by giving its competitors impressive nicknames. It also includes well-known athletes like Kailey Latimer from AEW, Dani Speegle, the winner of The Titan Games, former WWE wrestler Eric Bugenhagen, Big Brother and American Ninja Warrior competitor Faysal Shafaat, and Jessie Godderz, a former TNA World Tag Team Champion.

Despite facing strong competition, the debut of American Gladiators at number four is a promising start. The Boys remains a huge draw for Prime Video, with its final episodes currently being released, and Invincible has already been renewed for multiple seasons due to its popularity. Plus, Young Sherlock recently received a second season renewal following positive reviews. The true test for American Gladiators will be how it performs in the coming weeks, as it continues to compete with new episodes of both Invincible and The Boys, but it definitely has the potential to improve its ranking.

The new American Gladiators on Prime Video is the latest attempt to bring the show back in the United States. The original series, which also has a successful international presence (including a UK version simply called Gladiators currently in its fourth season), was a huge hit in the 1990s, running for seven seasons and over 200 episodes. A previous revival in 2008, hosted by Hulk Hogan, only lasted two seasons. This new version has already been renewed for a second season, meaning more episodes are on the way.
