The psychological thriller Homecoming, which premiered on Prime Video in 2018 to widespread critical acclaim, has continued to improve over time. The series, created by Eli Horowitz and Micah Bloomberg, was originally based on the popular 2016 Gimlet Media podcast of the same name.
The show centers around Heidi, played by Julia Roberts, a social worker at the Homecoming Transitional Support Center. This center is a residential facility designed to help soldiers return to civilian life. However, as a psychological thriller, Homecoming quickly reveals that the center isn’t as helpful as it appears.
Homecoming Is Still Prime Video’s Best Psychological Thriller
Heidi works as a waitress, but she has amnesia and can’t remember anything about her time at a place called Homecoming. Four years after leaving, her past begins to resurface when a Department of Defense auditor starts investigating her time there, and she discovers the truth about Homecoming isn’t what she thought.
Similar to Netflix’s popular series Wayward, Homecoming takes place in a seemingly normal location that hides a disturbing and unsettling story. The show features a strong cast overall, but Julia Roberts is particularly impressive as Heidi, portraying her as both kind and fiercely determined to uncover the truth about her past.
The plot of Homecoming consistently surprises viewers, and even those who love twisty conspiracy thrillers like The Manchurian Candidate will find it hard to predict what happens. But the show offers more than just surprises; it also boasts a fantastic cast.
Homecoming’s Starry Cast Elevates A Great Story
While Julia Roberts is the most recognizable star in Homecoming, Sissy Spacek delivers a memorable performance as Heidi’s mother. Bobby Cannavale is reliably excellent as her boss, Colin Belfast, and Shea Whigham plays an auditor, Thomas, who is both subtly threatening and convincingly caring.
Why Homecoming Was Canceled After Two Seasons
Despite receiving a fantastic 98% rating on Rotten Tomatoes, the series Homecoming was surprisingly canceled after just two seasons. While season two added impressive actors like Janelle Monáe, Chris Cooper, and Joan Cusack, the show ultimately made a critical error in doing so.
Instead of continuing Heidi’s storyline, the second season of Homecoming introduced new characters and shifted to a new format with each season. This change reduced the show’s suspense, which was noticeable in the reviews it received.
While season 2 of Homecoming was generally well-received by critics, it didn’t quite live up to the brilliance of its first season. Because of this, ending the show after a strong second season was the right decision for this compelling psychological thriller.
