After yesterday’s announcement of cancelled projects and postponed releases, it’s understandable that people are feeling pessimistic about upcoming Ubisoft game announcements.
Fans of Prince of Persia were disappointed to learn that the remake of Sands of Time has been cancelled. However, the development team wants to assure everyone that this doesn’t mean they’re abandoning the Prince of Persia series altogether. They’ve stated they still plan to work on future games in the franchise.
It’s understandable why people are skeptical, especially after Ubisoft announced they’re cancelling six games and postponing seven more. The company is essentially hitting the reset button, aiming to improve the quality of its open-world and live-service games.
The new Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time Remake didn’t meet the studio’s quality standards. They explained that while the game showed promise, they couldn’t deliver the experience players deserved without significantly more time and money, which wasn’t feasible.
People involved with the project say this doesn’t mean Ubisoft is abandoning the Prince of Persia series altogether.
Despite years of difficulties developing the Sands of Time remake, the Prince of Persia series is currently thriving. Prince of Persia: The Lost Crown, a 2D action-adventure game, was a standout title in 2024, and The Rogue Prince of Persia is another strong addition to the franchise.
Playing older Prince of Persia games can be tricky. Titles released for PS2 and PS3 aren’t available on PS4 or PS5 through PS Plus, meaning you’ll need an original PS3 console to enjoy them.
After reorganizing, Ubisoft revealed it will now organize game development through five teams called Creative Houses. The Prince of Persia, Rayman, and Beyond Good & Evil franchises will all be developed by Creative House 4.
