Viewers of the show Project Hail Mary might be surprised to recognize a familiar voice coming from an alien communicator.
Ryland Grady, portrayed by Ryan Gosling, is searching for a way to talk to Rocky, an alien from the planet Erid. He’s cycling through different computerized voice options, and one voice is clearly different from the rest.
Andy Weir explains Meryl Streep’s cameo in Project Hail Mary
So, I was reading an interview with Andy Weir, the guy who wrote the book ‘The Martian,’ and he was talking about a fun little moment in the movie. Apparently, Ryan Gosling just spontaneously said on set, “Ah, Meryl Streep, she can do anything.” Everyone loved it so much they decided to actually keep the line in the film! It’s cool to hear how those little, unplanned things sometimes make it into the final cut.
The team had one key requirement: any use of Meryl Streep’s voice had to be a genuine recording, not a computer-generated imitation. They contacted Streep, and she readily agreed to record a single line for the project. As author Andy Weir explained to Forbes, the result was wonderfully layered: Meryl Streep acting as a computer that was, in turn, imitating Meryl Streep herself.
I’m so excited about Project Hail Mary! It’s based on the awesome book by Andy Weir – the guy who wrote The Martian, which was a huge hit. The movie follows Ryland Grace, played by Ryan Gosling, who wakes up on a spaceship with absolutely no idea who he is or what he’s supposed to be doing. From what I’ve heard, the directors, Phil Lord and Christopher Miller, did an amazing job staying true to the book while also adding their own creative touches. Gosling’s even producing it, along with Sandra Hüller, James Ortiz, and Lionel Boyce. It’s already getting a lot of buzz, and I can’t wait to see it!
Andy Weir’s path to Hollywood wasn’t typical. Before his novel The Martian became a worldwide hit and a movie directed by Ridley Scott and starring Matt Damon, he was a software engineer who first published his work online himself. He entered traditional publishing and eventually saw his story adapted for the screen only after his blog gained a large readership, solidifying his status as a science fiction author.
