A PlayStation 1 game originally released in 1997 has unexpectedly been re-released on a newer console. 1997 was a peak year for the PS1, with iconic titles like Final Fantasy VII, Castlevania: Symphony of the Night, Tekken 3, Gran Turismo, and Grand Theft Auto all debuting on the system worldwide. Now, another well-loved PS1 game from that year – one that also launched a successful series – has surprisingly appeared on a different platform, even though PlayStation still owns the rights.
The popular snowboarding game Cool Boarders is now available on Nintendo Switch 2! After a 20-year hiatus, the game—which was a classic on the original PlayStation—returns. Following its 1997 debut in the US, new Cool Boarders games were released almost every year, with Cool Boarders 4 arriving in 1999. Now, thanks to publisher Hamster and their new “Console Archives” series, the very first Cool Boarders is playable on Nintendo hardware for the first time ever.
Starting today, Switch 2 owners can play Console Archives: Cool Boarders. It will also be available on PS5 on February 14th. This isn’t the first time Cool Boarders has appeared on PlayStation consoles, though – a version was released for PS5 and PS4 last year. We don’t yet know exactly what changes this new version will have, but PlayStation Plus Premium subscribers can already play the existing version through the PS Store.
It’s great to see PlayStation revisiting Cool Boarders, a series they haven’t touched in over two decades. This could mean we might see other classic PS1 games make a comeback on current platforms in the future. There’s also a possibility of a brand new Cool Boarders game being developed. Only time will tell what happens, but it’s definitely exciting that Cool Boarders is now available to a wider audience than ever before.
