A classic game originally released for the PlayStation in 1996 is being re-released to celebrate its 30th anniversary, along with its direct sequel from the PlayStation 2. 1996 was a landmark year for gaming, launching huge titles like Super Mario 64, Resident Evil, Crash Bandicoot, Tomb Raider, Quake, and Super Mario RPG. Not only did it give us many iconic games, but it also saw the beginning of several brand new gaming franchises, as demonstrated by just a few examples from that year.
Okay, so a lot of newer gamers might not remember, but I first got into the Legacy of Kain series way back on the PS1 with Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain. And now, 30 years later, Limited Run Games just announced a Deluxe Edition bundle with both Blood Omen and its PS2 sequel! It’s gonna cost $100, but you get emulated versions for the PS5, plus a really cool exclusive Steel Case and a Softcover Art Book. Pre-orders opened today and stay live until July 5th. Just a heads-up though – if you grab it, you’re looking at a wait… they’re saying it’ll ship sometime between January and March of 2027!

Classic PS1 and PS2 Games
If you’re new to these games, Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain was the first in the series, originally released in 1996. Created by Silicon Knights and published by Crystal Dynamics, it’s an action-adventure game that initially launched as a PlayStation exclusive. It was later made available on PC, but never released on any other consoles. The game was a commercial success and received a score of 83% on GameRankings.
Released in 2002, Blood Omen 2 is technically the fourth game in the series, but continues the story directly after the original Blood Omen. By this point, Crystal Dynamics was developing the games, and Eidos Interactive was publishing them. The game was directed by Glenn Schofield, who later became known for creating Dead Space and co-founding Sledgehammer Games, the studio behind Call of Duty. The first Blood Omen was directed by Denis Dyack, the founder of Silicon Knights, who stepped away from game development for many years but recently returned to work on Deadhaus Sonata.
