PS1 Shooter Gets New Release Over 20 Years Later

A classic shooting game originally released near the end of the PlayStation 1’s lifespan has made a comeback this week. Early first- and third-person shooters were still evolving on home consoles during the PS1 era. While games like Medal of Honor, DOOM, Duke Nukem, and Syphon Filter existed, a different type of shooter – known as “shmups” – was actually more popular. Now, a relatively unknown shmup from that time has been revived for modern systems.

The classic arcade game Geki-Oh ShienRyu is back! Originally created by Warashi and released in Japanese arcades in 1997, ShienRyu is a fast-paced shooter where you pilot a jet fighter against waves of enemies through diverse levels. While popular in Japan, it didn’t reach Western audiences until 2002 with the PlayStation release, Geki-Oh Shooting King. Now, more than 20 years later, that version of the game is available to play again.

Hamster Corporation has just released Geki-Oh ShienRyu on PlayStation 5 and Nintendo Switch as part of their “Console Archives” series. The game is available now for $11.99 and includes all the updates and features originally added to the PS1 version by Warashi, plus some new improvements. Key additions for players are save states and the ability to customize button controls.

According to the game description, [Geki-Oh ShienRyu] challenges you to defeat endless waves of enemies and massive war machines with non-stop attacks. It’s a fast-paced ‘shoot and dodge’ game where you fight back with powerful weapons. Plus, there are extra bonus modes to make the game even more engaging!

Shoot ’em up games aren’t as common as they used to be, so it’s great to see Geki-Oh ShienRyu getting a wider release and being easier to play. If you’re looking for a good shoot ’em up on PS5 or Switch, this is now a solid choice.
