Nintendo Switch 2 Stealth Releases 1999 Classic

A popular game first released in 1999 is now available on the Nintendo Switch 2. It was previously playable on the original Switch thanks to compatibility features, but now there’s a version specifically designed for the new console. Owners of the Switch version can upgrade for only $5. It’s worth noting this isn’t the original game from 1999, but a more recently updated and improved version.

In 2017, a remastered version of the classic 1999 game RollerCoaster Tycoon, originally created by Chris Sawyer and Frontier Developments, was released. This version, called RollerCoaster Tycoon Classic, first came to the Nintendo Switch in 2024 and is now being updated for the new Nintendo Switch 2. While the updated version will cost $5 for existing Switch owners, it’s not entirely clear what changes justify the price. The only confirmed improvements are enhanced resolution and new mouse controls using the Joy-Con 2. Though these are improvements, upgrade costs usually include more substantial changes. The full game will cost new players $30 on the Switch 2, which is $5 more than on other gaming systems. While this price difference isn’t unusual for Switch and Switch 2 games, it’s still a bit disappointing.

Classic But Dormant Series

Aside from re-releases and experimental projects, the RollerCoaster Tycoon series hasn’t seen a major new installment since 2016 with RollerCoaster Tycoon World. This is likely because the game’s developer, Frontier Developments, has focused on its own creation, Planet Coaster. However, the strong sense of nostalgia for the original three RollerCoaster Tycoon games continues to keep the series alive and popular through those re-releases.

If you’re interested, the original game from 1999 received a score of 88 on GameRankings. The remastered ‘Classic’ version has a Metacritic score between 81 and 90, though it varies slightly depending on which system you play it on.
