PlayStation 3 owners will soon lose access to a feature that launched 17 years ago. While most players have upgraded to PS4 or PS5, the PS3 still has some online features, like the PlayStation Store, available. However, one app on the PS3 will be shutting down in less than a month.
Netflix announced this week that it will stop supporting PlayStation 3 consoles on March 2nd. After the end of February, PS3 users will no longer be able to stream movies, TV shows, or podcasts through the Netflix app. While not unexpected – Sony stopped making the PS3 in 2016 – this means PlayStation users who still rely on their PS3 for Netflix will need to find a new way to watch soon.
Almost 20 years ago, the PlayStation 3 was one of the first consoles to offer Netflix as the streaming service began to gain popularity. At first, users needed a special disc to access Netflix on their PS3. Later, in 2010, a dedicated Netflix app was added to the console and received regular updates – until recently.

Will PS3 Continue to Lose More Features?
It’s not unexpected that features are disappearing from the PS3 as the system ages, but it’s still disappointing to see it become outdated. As someone who still uses their PS3, I think it’s a great platform, even though it didn’t sell as well as other PlayStation consoles. The games available for it are still fantastic, and because many can’t be played anywhere else, it’s worth keeping around even in 2026.
Eventually, Sony will probably shut down the PlayStation Store for the PS3. They first announced this plan in 2021, but reversed it after a lot of criticism from players. Hopefully, Sony won’t stop supporting the PS3 for a long time, as it would become difficult to play games from that era in the future.
