After announcing last month that a PS4 console exclusive from 2019 was coming back, another PlayStation-exclusive game from 2015 has made an unexpected return. Initially launched as a PlayStation-only title, it wasn’t until 2019 that it appeared on Nintendo Switch. Subsequently, it joined the Xbox One platform two years later. Since then, there had been no significant updates until now.
The game under discussion, playable on both PS4 and PS Vita, is titled “Nuclear Throne“. This was one of the initial successful indie games on PlayStation 4. Produced and distributed by Vlambeer, “Nuclear Throne” offers a post-apocalyptic top-down shooting experience with bullet-hell and roguelike elements. It earned an impressive 89 on Metacritic, making it one of the highest-rated games of its year. Interestingly, this year also marks the 10th anniversary for the game, as well as developer Vlambeer’s 15th anniversary. To commemorate these milestones, a significant update numbering the 100th is set to be released on December 5, which was the original release date of the game. This update will introduce C-Skins for all 13 characters, a new custom difficulty mode, localization, support for running at over 60 frames per second, and numerous additional quality of life enhancements.
Steam First, Console Later
The upcoming update will mark one of the largest changes the game has seen in years, but unfortunately, it’s exclusive to Steam. However, it seems that the developers are planning to bring this update to consoles at some point in the future.
Initially, the update will only be available on Steam. After addressing any major issues or bugs, we aim to release the update on additional platforms too.
Does Nuclear Throne Hold Up in 2025?
Contrary to many games from 2015, Nuclear Throne remains relevant in 2025. This enduring appeal isn’t due to its reliance on cutting-edge technology, rather, it’s timelessness stems from its lack of dependence on it. In other words, this game hasn’t shown signs of aging because of this unique aspect. While it might be argued that more games have since emulated its features, making it potentially redundant, the game’s quality remains as high in 2025 as it was in 2015.
PS4 Support Reportedly Coming to an End
This announcement arrives with rumors suggesting that Sony might soon cease support for the PlayStation 4. Moreover, it’s worth noting that Sony has already updated the console to eliminate certain features, hinting at its impending phase-out. Despite the PS4 potentially fading away, fans of the game “Nuclear Throne” can still enjoy playing it on their PlayStation 5 or Pro, as the game is playable and available for purchase through backward compatibility.
