Sony’s PlayStation 5 continues to be a major hit, with 84.5 million consoles sold as of September 30th. It’s significantly outselling the Xbox Series X/S this generation. Sony is now aiming to sell even more, targeting 90 million units by the end of the year, according to CFO Lin Tao in a recent earnings call.
Looking ahead to next year, our priority is a strong finish to this year. We’re aiming to have 90 million units installed by the start of next year, which means selling an additional 5.6 million units before December 31st. While we shipped 3.9 million units last quarter, we still need to focus on actual sales to reach our goal.
However, with the successful launch of Ghost of Yōtei – selling 3.3 million copies in just one month – and the upcoming holidays, it’s likely to reach that goal. This doesn’t even include sales from events like Black Friday in the US.
During the earnings call, Sony reported that Destiny 2 didn’t perform as well as expected, leading to a loss of approximately $204.4 million (¥31.5 billion). They also confirmed that Marathon is still planned for release before March 31, 2026, though a specific date hasn’t been set.
