PS5 Console Sales Surpass 80 Million Milestone, Closing in on PS3

In their recently released financial report, Sony disclosed that the PlayStation 5 (PS5) has surpassed 80.3 million units in total sales.

In the first quarter of fiscal year 2025 (April to June), 2.5 million PlayStation 5 systems were sold, pushing it closer to a significant achievement. This puts the PS5 just shy of the PS3’s total lifetime sales of approximately 87.4 million units. If sales continue at their current pace, the PS5 is expected to surpass the PS3’s sales before the beginning of the next fiscal year, which is April 2026.

In the same three-month span each year, Sony moved 65.9 million units of both PS5 and PS4 games, with approximately 6.9 million being first-party titles. It is worth noting that about 83% of these sales involved digital versions, while only 17% were for physical copies. This represents a slightly smaller market share for physical games compared to the previous year. Additionally, PSN retained its user base at approximately 123 million active users monthly.

In May 2026, when GTA 6 is expected to be released, marking the end of this console generation, there’s a strong possibility that sales of the PlayStation 5 (PS5) will soar. This could be due to Sony collaborating with Rockstar Games on a promotional agreement, linking the PS5 closely to GTA 6 and advertising them as a package deal. If GTA 6 boasts significant enhancements, there might also be an increase in demand for the PS5 Pro model, as current PS5 users might choose to upgrade for an optimized gaming experience.
