Starting later this week, Sony is slightly raising the prices of its one-month and three-month PS Plus Essential subscriptions for anyone who signs up after the change.
As I mentioned earlier today, I believe this change is meant to highlight the value of the yearly subscription, which remains the same. It’s clear the company wants to discourage customers from frequently switching between different, smaller subscriptions.
However, the company faced significant backlash on X (formerly Twitter) when they announced their plans. A popular user, @videotech, stated that online games should be free and accessible to everyone by 2026, without requiring any payments to unlock content.
So, good news for those of us who already pay our yearly PlayStation Plus fee – we’re all good! But this whole situation has got me thinking… is the basic PS Plus Essential tier really worth it when we look ahead to 2026? It just makes you wonder if it’s still a good deal.
So, I ran a quick poll after the announcement to see what everyone thought about the price, and honestly, the results weren’t great. Only 18% of us thought it was a good deal. Another 19% were on the fence, but a whopping 64% of us feel like it’s just not worth the money. Pretty clear most of us aren’t thrilled!
The monthly games have been really great recently. Just this year, we’ve gotten titles like Nine Sols, Monster Hunter Rise, and Disney Epic Mickey: Rebrushed, and that’s only a few examples!
With prices constantly going up, people are understandably frustrated with feeling like their money doesn’t go as far. Everything, including video game consoles, is becoming more expensive, and customers are simply getting tired of it – even though this particular price increase might not be as significant as it first appeared.
Sony sometimes makes things worse for itself. While cloud saves are heavily promoted as a key benefit of PS Plus Essential, many players now assume that feature should be available to everyone without a subscription.
Maybe a good fix would be to give everyone a little bit of free storage, and then provide much more storage to PlayStation Plus Essential subscribers who pay. Would that be a better approach?
Sony has indicated it plans to generate more revenue from its current users to cover increasing expenses, so players should expect to pay more for games and services in the future.
Look, I get that stuff like tariffs and chip shortages are beyond their control, but I really think the company needs to find a better balance between making money and keeping its fans happy. It just feels like sometimes they prioritize profits a little too much, you know?
Look, I get that things cost more, and they might try to raise prices a little. But if they keep pushing it, people like me are going to start finding other options. There’s only so much we’re willing to pay!
