The PS5 is Sony’s most successful ever console.
The company announced this, with CEO Hideaki Nishino sharing the news during a presentation at Tokyo Game Show 2025, as reported by Geoff Keighley.
What does it mean to be “most successful” here? It seems Nishino is focusing on financial gain, judging by the main image from his presentation that’s been shared online.
This includes not only console sales, but also revenue from the PlayStation Store, PlayStation Plus subscriptions, and all of Sony’s PS5 accessories. It’s a comprehensive total that’s significantly higher than what previous consoles earned.
This comes after Sony’s recent financial report in August, which showed the company was doing very well.
The world of gaming has changed a lot in the past twenty years. Nowadays, how many physical copies of a game are sold isn’t as important as consistent income from digital stores – and for companies like Sony, that income is quite significant.
However, when figuring out how Sony defines success, it’s important to consider a few things. This console generation has been, and remains, quite costly.
Everything costs a lot – the console itself, the extras you need, and even the games. Plus, with rising prices, it’s hard to make it affordable. We’re not financial experts, so we won’t try to explain the economics of it all.
Ultimately, PlayStation is doing incredibly well, and the PS5 is clearly setting the standard for everything the company does going forward.
The PS5 has been a huge hit – what do you think is the main reason why? Looking ahead, what are your hopes for the PS6? And, with over $136 billion in sales, let’s discuss it all in the comments!
