The gaming giant, PlayStation, has announced that they’re joining other companies in increasing the cost of PS5 consoles. Ever since video games first appeared on the scene, they’ve been a costly pastime. You need a few hundred dollars for the console itself, accessories can be quite pricey, and individual games often sell for $60-$70. Despite this, gaming has remained a popular form of entertainment due to its passionate fan base. However, the high costs are becoming a challenge even for die-hard gamers.
Previously, Nintendo announced that they will be charging $80 for certain Nintendo Switch 2 video games and an impressive $450 for the console itself. This is a significant jump from their previous prices. Initially, the Nintendo Switch 1 was priced at $299 upon release, and later introduced more affordable options such as the Switch Lite. Games were typically priced at $60 or less, except for The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom which retailed for $70, a common price point in the industry today. Interestingly, Nintendo has also raised prices on the Nintendo Switch 1, even though it’s almost a decade old and considered a previous-generation console.
Earlier this summer, Microsoft’s Xbox announced that they would be increasing the prices of most of their products, including accessories and consoles. Starting this fall, some first-party games will cost $80, which may include Call of Duty, but due to backlash, Xbox has since retracted the $80 price tag. The Series X console will now be priced at $600, while the Series S will cost $379. However, it’s important to note that the increase in prices is only for hardware-related products at this time. Now, Sony’s PlayStation is also set to implement its own price hikes.
PlayStation Raises Prices on PS5 Consoles

- PlayStation 5 – $549.99
- PlayStation 5 Digital Edition – $499.99
- PlayStation 5 Pro – $749.99
In simpler terms, PlayStation initially believed that any tariff effects would be minimal by early 2025. However, it’s uncertain whether the potential increase in game prices is directly linked to these tariffs or simply a reflection of increasing game development expenses.
