The PS5 Pro is performing exceptionally well in games made by Sony, such as Ghost of Yotei. However, other game developers are finding it more challenging to optimize their games for the new console.
According to Digital Foundry, The Outer Worlds 2 currently delivers the worst performance of any game tested on Sony’s $750 PlayStation console.
Tech experts have found that the system doesn’t offer a noticeable performance boost compared to the standard PS5. Furthermore, PlayStation’s image upscaling technology, PSSR, actually creates visual problems and makes the picture less stable.

No matter what graphics setting I choose – whether I’m prioritizing a smooth 60fps in Performance mode, a prettier look at 30fps in Quality mode, or a solid 40fps at 120Hz with Balanced – everything stays consistent. It’s nice to know the game doesn’t change how it plays depending on how I tweak the visuals.
To make matters worse, the standard PS5 already performs worse than the Xbox Series X in most games. This leads to problems like inconsistent frame rates and screen tearing, which aren’t found on the Xbox Series X.
All of these flaws also apply to the PS5 Pro, on top of the aforementioned image quality issues.
So, dev Obsidian has a lot of work still to do here, then.
Digital Foundry suggests the PlayStation 5 versions of the game were likely added during development after the initial plans. This makes sense considering the game was first revealed as exclusive to Xbox, before Microsoft changed its strategy to release games on multiple platforms.
Just a heads-up for anyone buying a physical copy of The Outer Worlds 2: the disc only contains 1.3GB of game data. Essentially, you’re mostly paying for a code to download the rest of the game.
Beyond all of these issues, the game’s fine, though.
In our review, we noted that The Outer Worlds 2 improves upon the original, offering players more choices and freedom, though it didn’t quite reach our expectations, earning a 7/10 score.
Despite strong writing, Obsidian feels consistently gloomy. The characters aren’t very engaging, and the groups they belong to are overly simplistic, making it hard to become invested in the story.
