It turns out Sony doesn’t always need a huge budget to create a hit game. The side-scrolling game, God of War: Sons of Sparta, has been surprisingly successful.
A Metroidvania game developed by Mega Cat Studios unexpectedly appeared on sales charts after being announced during a State of Play presentation. In February 2026, it ranked 14th overall in Circana’s sales report, and impressively reached 6th place among PlayStation games specifically.
Keep in mind these charts are based on earnings, not how many copies were sold. That means this platform game actually performed surprisingly well.
Because the game was priced at only $29.99, it needed to sell twice as many copies as some more expensive games it outperformed, such as the new release My Hero Academia: All’s Justice, which costs $59.99.
This shows there’s definitely an audience for smaller, directly-developed games from PlayStation. While opinions on Sons of Sparta are mixed – some people really enjoy it, others find it underwhelming – the game has been a commercial success overall.
More like this please, Sony.
