Starfield is crashing repeatedly for players on both the standard PS5 and the PS5 Pro, and the cause of the issue is currently unknown.
Just to clarify, this problem doesn’t seem to affect everyone. During our testing for the Starfield PS5 review, we didn’t experience any major issues.
More and more players are reporting frequent crashes with the game on Reddit, especially now that it’s been out for its first weekend on PlayStation consoles.
It’s concerning because we’re now running into these crashes ourselves. This player started the game on Friday night and immediately encountered consistent crashes while exploring one of the game’s main cities.
We did some testing and found that the game crashes seem to be related to your graphics settings. On the PlayStation 5 Pro, we tried every visual mode – Visuals, Enhanced, and Performance – with the frame rate set to its maximum, and we consistently experienced crashes in all of them.
The game only ran smoothly in the city when we limited the frame rate to 60 frames per second. But when we explored the wilderness, it kept crashing.
We fixed the issue by turning off PSSR 2, the PS5 Pro’s new upscaling feature that uses AI, in the system settings. Since then, we’ve played Starfield for several hours without any crashes.
We’ve noticed this issue ourselves, but it seems others on Reddit are having the same problem. They’ve tried many different solutions, but none of them have worked so far.
Of course, turning off PSSR 2 doesn’t fix the crashes that happen when playing the sci-fi RPG on the standard console hardware.
In short, there’s something very wrong with Starfield right now.
Even the experts at Digital Foundry have experienced crashes while playing Starfield. In their technical review, they noted that the PlayStation 5 and the upcoming PlayStation 5 Pro crashed fairly often during testing – something they didn’t see on Xbox Series X/S at launch. These crashes completely freeze the game, requiring a full system restart. They encountered this problem in various settings and modes, and haven’t found a way to prevent it.
Hopefully, Bethesda will fix the issues with Starfield quickly. The game came out on PlayStation 5 on April 7th, and no updates have been released so far.
Bethesda is known for releasing video games with a lot of problems, but it’s especially frustrating that Starfield – released on PlayStation 5 almost three years after its initial launch – is still plagued by crashes. It’s really unbelievable that these issues persist.
