Even with price increases and fewer exclusive games made directly by Sony recently, the PlayStation 5 is still a major win for the company. Market research firm Circana reports that the PS5 has now sold more units in the US than the PlayStation 3 did in its entire lifetime. The PS3, which launched in Japan and the US in November 2006, ultimately sold 87.4 million units worldwide by March 31, 2017.
Looking at the PlayStation 5’s performance compared to its predecessor, the PS4, it’s clear the PS5 has been selling faster. By June 30th, over 80.3 million PS5 units had been shipped globally. According to Mat Piscatella, a director at Circana, the PS5 has consistently outsold the PS4 in the United States. After being available for 59 months, the PS5’s sales are 4.6 percent higher than the PS4’s were at the same point in its lifecycle.
Wow, those sales figures really back up what Sony’s been saying – this is officially their best console generation ever! Though, honestly, with so many games coming out on both PS4 and PS5, I think the PS4 definitely helped boost those numbers. But even with the PS5 doing so well, I’m already hearing rumors that they’re working on the PS6, and it might be out as early as 2027! You can find more info about that here.

As a PlayStation fan, it’s really cool to see how well the PS5 is doing! It’s actually selling better than the PS4 did at this point in its life. Looking at the numbers through September – which is about 59 months after launch – the PS5 is ahead by almost 5% compared to how the PS4 was doing back then. That’s a pretty big deal!
