The new free-to-play game, NTE, reportedly earned back about a third of its development costs on its very first day.
The new open-world game, released last week on PlayStation 5, PC, and mobile, earned ¥100 million (about $14.6 million) on its first day, according to its publisher, Perfect World.
The game is estimated to have cost around 300 million Chinese yuan (about $44 million), but we haven’t confirmed this figure.
The company reports their newest game is doing much better than their previous hit, Tower of Fantasy. Currently, PlayStation 5 and PC versions make up three-quarters of the game’s total earnings worldwide.
The company’s position in Sensor Tower’s rankings might have worried some investors, as those rankings only consider revenue from mobile devices. With these games becoming more complex, players are increasingly opting to play on consoles or PCs instead.
Perfect World has observed that players are currently spending more time enjoying the game’s social and life simulation aspects – like building and crafting – than engaging in combat. They’re paying attention to player feedback and plan to make some parts of the game less repetitive and time-consuming.
The company also emphasized its desire to keep the game accessible and enjoyable for all players. They are now considering allowing players to directly buy virtual items like karts, homes, and character customizations.
Although the game includes gacha elements, it’s currently one of the most player-friendly options available. It avoids the frustrating ’50/50′ system common in many similar games, where you only have a 50% chance of getting the character you want after a certain number of attempts.
The publisher plans to keep making money from the game by selling extra content, like in-game items, as downloadable content (DLC). The upcoming Porsche cars are a good example – players will likely have to purchase them separately if they want to drive those vehicles.
