Early reviews are starting to appear for God of War: Sons of Sparta, the new side-scrolling game inspired by classic titles, developed by Mega Cat Studios.
Overall, this game is a decent Metroidvania, but it doesn’t quite stand out. With so many other options available, it might not be enough to really grab players’ attention.
The game currently has a Metacritic score of 69, which means it’s receiving generally mixed or average reviews.
This God of War game has the lowest score of any in the series, but that’s not surprising considering how highly-rated the franchise generally is. The previous lowest-rated game, God of War: Ascension on the PlayStation 3, scored an 80. The mobile game, God of War: Betrayal, also received mostly positive reviews when it came out in 2007, though its score isn’t currently listed on Metacritic.
The game still has a chance to score above a 70, and while our full review on Push Square is still coming, our initial impressions are similar to those of other reviewers.
Overall, we’re glad Sony decided to release this game. Fans have been asking for more affordable, smaller-scale games like those from the PS3 days, and this one definitely fits the bill.
The game is selling very well on the PlayStation Store, and it wouldn’t be surprising if Mega Cat Studios developed a sequel or further updates.
