We’ve previously discussed that the PlayStation 6, planned for release in 2027, is anticipated to be less powerful than the next Xbox. Now, it appears this difference in power will also result in a considerable cost savings.
This week, Sarah Bond, head of Xbox, shared some insights about future hardware plans during an interview with Mashable, while discussing the new ROG Xbox Ally X handheld.
She said:
Our next console is designed to be a top-of-the-line, carefully crafted experience. This handheld device gives you a glimpse of our vision, but we’re keeping some details under wraps for now.
Sounds expensive, doesn’t it? All that talk about a “very premium and high-end curated experience” suggests it’s quite luxurious – almost boutique level!
According to hardware leaker KeplerL2 on X (formerly Twitter), here’s what we can expect regarding the price of the PlayStation 6 compared to the next Xbox.
“$600 vs $1,200 is my guess,” he said.
It’s worth noting this is purely his own speculation, but he goes on to explain his thinking.
He added:
The new version uses 42% more silicon and 20% more memory, which increases production costs due to higher board and cooling expenses. Additionally, they’re no longer able to offset these costs by partnering with third-party retailers for support.
There’s talk that the next Xbox will basically be a powerful Windows PC, meaning you’ll likely be able to buy and play games from stores like Steam, GOG, and the Epic Games Store, in addition to the Xbox store.
Traditionally, video game consoles have operated by creating a closed ecosystem, controlling what games and services are available to users.
Sony often sells its gaming consoles at a loss or just to break even, with the goal of building a large user base. They then profit from game sales, taking a 30% share of the revenue from each game sold.
Because the next Xbox will allow game stores from PCs to operate on its system, it will lose its exclusive control over what’s available, and this is predicted to lead to a higher console price.
Obviously, it’s becoming increasingly likely that Sony and Microsoft now have very different aims.
The PlayStation 6 seems to be following in the footsteps of previous models, targeting a broad audience. However, the next Xbox appears to be geared towards a smaller, more specific group of gamers.
It’s going to be fascinating to see how this all plays out, isn’t it?
