PS6 Launching Timing and Prices “Not Yet Decided,” Says Sony CEO

Sony’s latest financial report sparked discussion, but not due to declining sales. The attention centered on their announcement of increased investment in their next-generation platform. This led to questions, such as whether current memory shortages might result in higher prices for consumers.

Sony’s CEO, Hiroki Totoki, recently stated that the cost of making the next PlayStation will likely go up, including the price of the parts needed. They’ve secured the necessary materials for the remainder of the year, but haven’t finalized the console’s price, though they’ve made some progress. A release date is still unknown.

We haven’t made any decisions yet about when we’ll release the new console or how much it will cost. We’re carefully watching the current market situation, especially memory prices, which we expect to remain high in 2027 due to ongoing supply shortages. We need to consider all of this as we plan our next steps.

Totoki explained that the company is exploring different options and strategies, even considering changes to their core business model, to find the best path forward.

We’ve been hearing for months that the PlayStation 6, along with a lighter, portable version, is expected to release in late 2027. This timing reportedly lines up with the launch of Microsoft’s next gaming console, currently known as Project Helix.

Rumors suggest the PlayStation 6 will be powered by an AMD Orion chip, boasting eight high-performance Zen 6 cores and two energy-efficient Zen 6 cores. Its graphics card is expected to have 54 RDNA 5 processing units. While the components are estimated to cost $760, a selling price of $699 might be achievable with financial support. However, Sony may choose not to pursue this option, reportedly because they don’t see Microsoft as a direct competitor. You can find more details about their reasoning here.
