There’s been concern that a shortage of memory chips and rising RAM costs might delay the launch of Microsoft and Sony’s new consoles. However, Strauss Zelnick, CEO of Take-Two Interactive, doesn’t think this will happen. In a recent interview, he stated that his company doesn’t anticipate any issues with the consoles reaching consumers on time.
Reports suggested Sony and Microsoft were initially targeting a 2027 release for their next consoles. However, a shortage of memory has led to speculation that both companies might delay those plans. In January, Insider Gaming’s Tom Henderson reported that discussions were happening at a high level within both Sony and Microsoft regarding potential launch dates.
Industry experts agree. David Gibson, a senior analyst at MST Financial, predicted earlier this year that Sony might keep selling the PS5 for longer than planned, potentially pushing back the release of the PS6 further than anticipated. The main reason cited in these analyses is the fluctuating and unstable cost of RAM.
According to a new report from industry source KeplerL2, Sony and Microsoft are still aiming to release their next-generation consoles during the 2027 holiday season. This aligns with information shared by YouTuber Moore’s Law is Dead, who suggested supply chain challenges are contributing to Sony’s commitment to this timeframe. Although both companies have probably been affected by parts shortages, a significant delay to 2028 or 2029 is considered improbable. Changing their plans now would likely be more expensive than launching as scheduled, even if it means absorbing higher production costs.
According to the YouTuber, memory technology is expected to improve considerably by late 2026 and even more by late 2027. The launch timing for the PS6 will probably be decided just before production begins at TSCM in early 2027.
Rumors suggest both the PlayStation 6 (PS6) and Microsoft’s Project Helix will use advanced chips made by AMD. The PS6’s chip is reportedly called Orion, while Project Helix’s is Magnus. Project Helix is predicted to be more powerful due to a larger chip and more processing power. However, experts believe the difference in performance between the two consoles won’t be very noticeable in actual gameplay.
Rumors suggest the upcoming Project Helix boasts 26% more processing power than the PlayStation 6, which looks impressive on paper. Interestingly, the Xbox Series X has about 44% more processing power than the PlayStation 5, but during their time on the market, we didn’t see a major difference in how games actually played on either console.
