A trustworthy source of hardware leaks, Moore’s Law Is Dead, reports that Sony is taking steps to avoid potential problems with RAM supply, which could impact the PlayStation 5.
The YouTuber says the Japanese company bought a lot of GDDR6 RAM when it was cheap, protecting themselves from possible shortages in the future.
Okay, so it looks like Microsoft might be making a mistake. I’m hearing they’re warning their partners that the Xbox Series X|S is probably going to get even more expensive. Seriously? It’s already the priciest console out there, and so far, they haven’t even said anything about Black Friday deals. That’s a bit frustrating as a gamer, to be honest.

In short, OpenAI has made significant deals with Samsung and SK Hynix to buy a large portion – potentially up to 40% – of the world’s DRAM memory.
This leaves the remaining 60% of the market to be split among all other tech companies – those making everything from game consoles and cars to smartphones. The resulting high demand has caused prices to increase dramatically.
Sony anticipated potential supply chain issues and reportedly purchased the necessary components when prices were lower. This secures them against future price increases and may even allow them to offer a discount on the PS5 during Black Friday sales.
This doesn’t mean PlayStation is completely shielded from price increases forever. If interest rates stay high, they could still be impacted down the line. However, at the moment, it appears they’re in a good position.
This isn’t the first time Sony has proactively planned for the future and changed its business strategy. For example, when rumors of tariffs began circulating, they built up a large supply of PS5 consoles in the US, which protected them from price hikes for a longer period than other companies.
The company ultimately had to change the platform’s price. To avoid further increases, especially with rising manufacturing costs, they’ve also adjusted the console’s memory capacity in Europe.
