The X-Men comic book series has been around longer than any other, and its movies have featured some truly memorable villains. Now, with the X-Men joining the Marvel Cinematic Universe after a brief appearance in The Marvels, they’re poised to become a central part of the MCU starting with Phase 7. The first X-Men movie came out in 2000, and there have been eight main films since then, plus additional movies focused on characters like Wolverine and Deadpool. Although many X-Men villains haven’t made it to the big screen yet – like Mister Sinister and the Brood – the villains we have seen have become iconic.
As a huge X-Men fan, I’ve been thinking a lot about all the big bads we’ve seen in the movies, especially now that the X-Men are heading into the Marvel Cinematic Universe. So, I decided to take a look back at every major villain the team has faced on the big screen.
10) Vuk

Although the last X-Men movie from Fox was titled Dark Phoenix, the actual villains weren’t focused on Jean Grey herself. Instead, the film featured the Vuk, a little-known alien race from Marvel Comics. These aliens first appeared in Avengers #4 and only showed up in a total of nine comics over 62 years. Originally, in the comics, it was the Hellfire Club that influenced Jean Grey. Many fans were disappointed that the movie replaced them with a relatively uninteresting alien race, and this is a major reason why Dark Phoenix is often considered the weakest film in the X-Men series.
9) Dark Phoenix

Honestly, when people debate the worst X-Men movie, it always comes down to either The Last Stand or Dark Phoenix. Both of them really disappointed fans and wrapped up their respective series of films on a downer. It’s frustrating because both movies attempted the Dark Phoenix Saga, but neither one truly made Phoenix the central villain she should have been. It’s a shame, because it’s such an important story and character in X-Men history, and after two tries, she still hasn’t gotten the proper adaptation she deserves. It’s just… frustrating!
8) Lady Deathstrike

Lady Deathstroke, also known as Yuriko Oyama, was a powerful mutant with adamantium claws and incredibly fast healing. She seemed like a great match for Wolverine as an enemy, and played a role in both William Stryker’s plans and Wolverine’s history in X2: X-Men United. Unfortunately, the character felt underdeveloped and ultimately forgettable. While Wolverine’s victory over her was clever, it didn’t do justice to her potential as a villain.
7) The Horsemen of Apocalypse

The idea of the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse had a lot of potential in X-Men: Apocalypse, but the execution fell short. While the team – Storm (Famine), Psylocke (Pestilence), Angel (Death), and Magneto (War) – had some good choices, particularly Angel, most of the characters didn’t make a significant impact. Psylocke’s abilities were underutilized, Angel didn’t live up to his comic book counterpart, and Storm was underwhelming. Ultimately, none of them reached their full potential from the source material, and they ended up being uninteresting villains in the film, even if they had been more accurate to the comics.
6) The Hellfire Club

While the movie’s version of the Hellfire Club differed from the comics, it didn’t significantly impact the enjoyment of X-Men: First Class. The film was a strong prequel, effectively showing how the X-Men and the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants came together, making for a compelling story. Azazel stood out visually thanks to his striking design, but his character wasn’t particularly memorable. Kevin Bacon delivered a solid performance as always, though Sebastian Shaw lacked the intimidating presence he needed. The biggest disappointment, however, was Emma Frost, who felt underutilized and lacked impact despite being a powerful and important character in the Marvel comics.
5) The Sentinels

The Sentinels have always been a major danger to mutants, but they haven’t had many great moments in the X-Men films. Their most impressive appearance was definitely in X-Men: Days of Future Past, where a bleak future showed the Sentinels ruthlessly hunting and killing mutants. This really established them as powerful and frightening villains. Recent teasers for the upcoming X-Men movie within the Marvel Cinematic Universe suggest that the Sentinels will finally be portrayed as the serious threat they’ve always been.
4) Apocalypse

Despite being a bit of a letdown overall, X-Men: Apocalypse had some strong points. The villain, Apocalypse, was well-developed, and Oscar Isaac delivered a great performance. The special effects and the character’s design were also impressive. What really stood out was that Apocalypse felt like a genuine threat – more so than most X-Men movie villains – and came closer than anyone to defeating the mutants. The mental duel between Apocalypse and Professor X was a particularly powerful scene, showcasing how effectively the film captured the spirit of the comic book villains from the earlier storylines, something the Fox X-Men films hadn’t quite achieved before.
3) The Brotherhood of Evil Mutants

The first X-Men movies featured the Brotherhood of Evil Mutants, but they weren’t very true to the comic book versions. Juggernaut was a particular letdown, though some villains, like Pyro, worked well despite the changes – he was so good, he even appeared in Deadpool & Wolverine. Sabretooth didn’t match his comic book counterpart, but he was memorable in the first film, and Mystique was a strong villain throughout the original trilogy. Ultimately, the changes made to these villains didn’t negatively impact the movies.
2) William Stryker

The William Stryker portrayed in X2: X-Men United differed significantly from his comic book counterpart, and that was a positive change. While the comic version was a compelling figure – a preacher who instilled hatred towards mutants due to their differences – the film reimagined him as a military commander. This new take, especially his established connection to Wolverine, proved very effective for the movie’s narrative. Stryker remains one of the strongest villains in the X-Men films, second only to a single, key character.
1) Magneto

For me, Magneto is hands-down the greatest X-Men villain we’ve seen on screen – no one else even compares. What really gets to me is that he genuinely believed in what he was doing, and you can totally understand why. His childhood was horrific – he was a kid in a World War II concentration camp and lost his parents simply because they were Jewish. Seeing that kind of hatred and prejudice firsthand made him determined to protect mutants, and I get that. Plus, his relationship with Professor X is just so compelling – they’re these lifelong friends with such a complicated history. Honestly, he’s the perfect villain, but in a way, he’s also a hero – you end up rooting for him too.
