Robert Kirkman and Simon Racioppa, the creators of the show Invincible, recently explained a significant change made in Season 4 before the start of the Viltrumite War storyline. They discussed their decision to change the gender of a popular teenage character from the original comic book.
Invincible showrunners explain why Tech Jacket is a woman
In Season 4 of Invincible, the character Tech Jacket is reimagined as Zoe Thompson, voiced by Zoey Deutch, a change from the original comic book version, Zack Thompson. Robert Kirkman, one of the show’s creators, told Den of Geek the reason for this change was simple.
As a huge fan of Kirkman’s work, I found it fascinating to hear about the creation of Tech Jacket. He mentioned that initially, the character felt a little too close to Mark Grayson, Invincible’s protagonist. So, they made a really cool decision: they flipped the gender! Instead of imagining ‘Zach,’ they started developing ‘Zoe,’ and Kirkman said that simple change opened up a lot of exciting possibilities for the character and the story. It’s a testament to how even small tweaks can really breathe new life into a concept.
Tech Jacket debuted in his own comic book in 2001, created by writer Robert Kirkman and artist E.J. Su. The comic added depth to the ‘Invincible’ story by exploring the conflict between the Gelderians and the Kresh. In the animated series, Zoe appears during the storyline focused on the Viltrumite War.
Kirkman directly complimented Deutch’s work, saying her portrayal brought a lot of life and energy to the character. He added that they’re really enjoying working with her and that she’s a very engaging character.
Simon Racioppa, a co-showrunner on the project, discussed casting Zoey Deutch, explaining she immediately understood the character. He praised her professionalism, fun personality, and comedic timing, noting the character needed someone who could deliver both emotional depth and witty lines. Racioppa said the team was thrilled when she joined the show.
Zoe first appears in Season 4, Episode 5, where she defeats The Walking Dread before her identity is revealed.
New episodes of Invincible stream Wednesdays on Prime Video.
