Remembering Kellie Pickler and Kyle Jacobs’ Sweet Love Story

Kellie Pickler and Kyle Jacobs were making plans for a large wedding, wanting lots of guests to celebrate their commitment after dating for two years.

But before the invitations went out, the Nashville-based couple realized something.

Kellie Pickler jokingly admitted that when creating their wedding guest list, she didn’t like many of the people on it – but clarified it wasn’t personal. Pickler, who hadn’t been back to American Idol in three years, appeared on The Ellen DeGeneres Show a month after eloping with her husband in Antigua. The couple exchanged vows on January 1, 2011, right on the beach, standing in the water.

I packed the wedding dress and an outfit for him, and then we just trusted that everything would fall into place,” the country singer explained. “It did, and it was the most amazing day of my life.

Kellie Pickler had a special message engraved inside her husband’s wedding band. One side said “1-1-11,” and the other said “Put it back on!” She explained she wanted to make sure he knew exactly what to do if he ever removed the ring.

Throughout two seasons of the CMT series I Love Kellie Pickler, she and Jacobs consistently demonstrated their fun-loving and good-natured personalities. Beyond the show, they frequently collaborated on charitable work, like visiting American soldiers abroad – where they actually spent their honeymoon – and fundraising for children with special needs.

Having supported the event for many years, they organized the Island Time Music Festival in 2021 to raise money for the Little Yellow School House in Mexico. Jacobs described it as “one of the most beautiful things we’ve ever done” during an appearance on the Talk to Chuck podcast. This led host Chuck Wick to jokingly suggest he hadn’t known the songwriter was as kind as his well-known, upbeat wife.

“He’s got a good heart!” Pickler chimed in. “He’s a good man.”

After Jacobs tragically took his own life on February 17, 2023, at the age of 49, an overwhelming number of people shared heartfelt tributes, all echoing the same sentiment.

Jennifer Wayne, host of the Design Network show Flip U, shared a heartfelt message on the late Jacobs’ final Instagram post. She wrote, ‘Thank you for being such an amazing friend and like the brother I never had.’ She was celebrating his co-production work on Lee Brice’s platinum-selling album Hey World. Wayne continued, saying Jacobs always protected and cared for her, and promised to support his wife, Kellie, with all the love they could offer, as no one could ever replace him.

Dillon James, known from American Idol, shared a heartfelt message, saying he was speechless but happy they’d recently spoken. He offered his prayers to Kyle and his family and thanked Kyle for the good times they shared.

Brice shared a heartfelt tribute, describing Jacobs as truly one of the kindest and most supportive people a person could know.

Everyone reacted with shock, and it was a stark reminder that you never truly know what someone else is thinking or feeling. Even people who seem happy and successful on the outside might be struggling with hidden difficulties.

I couldn’t believe it when the autopsy report finally came out. They said there were no drugs in his system, which… honestly, I don’t know what to think. But then they mentioned a ‘history of chronic alcohol use.’ It just… it doesn’t add up! I’ve poured over every interview, every photo, and the idea of him struggling with alcohol… it’s heartbreaking, and it makes trying to understand what happened even harder. It’s just… a history. Not that he was actively using, just… a history. It feels like they’re glossing over something.

In 2008, Kelly Pickler revealed she struggled with depression for a year, explaining to People magazine that while her career was going well, she was falling apart personally.

She said that the support of her friends and a new relationship helped her overcome a difficult time.

“He makes me feel so good about being me,” she said of Jacobs at the time.

After Jacobs’s death, Pickler remained private for several months. She had already left her on-air position at SiriusXM’s The Highway in April 2023, and wasn’t ready to talk publicly until much later.

My husband taught me a valuable lesson during a difficult time: when you’re unsure what to do, sometimes the best thing is to simply pause and be present. As I shared with People magazine in August 2024, I’m choosing to follow that advice now.

She shared that the support she’s received has been deeply meaningful and is helping her cope with a very difficult period. She also expressed gratitude for everyone’s prayers, saying she’s been told many of you are thinking of her.

In September, Jacobs’ family and friends gathered at Franklin First UMC to honor his life. His family shared with People magazine that the event, though delayed, was crucial for them to begin healing and adjust to life after his unexpected death. They described it as a necessary step in coping with the shock of losing their son.

Kelly Pickler, who wasn’t involved in the service, had previously shared with People magazine that she was planning a small, private memorial for Kyle in the fall, explaining that it’s what he would have preferred.

Singer Taylor Swift, who became famous after placing sixth on American Idol in 2006 and has remained a successful artist from the show, first met John Mayer in 2008. She noticed him across a crowded room while at a bar in Nashville.

In 2015, on The Real, Pickler remembered not recognizing the man at first. She said they made eye contact, and she immediately felt compelled to learn everything about him.

They closed the place down, too busy talking to realize all their friends had left them to it.

On June 23, 2010, Jacobs proposed to Pickler at sunset on the beach – a special date, as it was the birthday of her grandmother, who had passed away. This romantic proposal led to their decision to have a beautiful island wedding.

The artist told Ellen DeGeneres how incredibly lucky she felt to be with her fiancé. She described him as a deeply religious and wonderful person who taught her the true meaning of love, and that she’d never experienced such respect or affection. She emphasized the importance of finding a loving partner and not settling for anything less.

During an appearance on The Kelly Clarkson Show in 2019, Kellie Pickler shared a story about when she impulsively suggested to her husband, Kyle Jacobs, that they ditch their wedding plans and elope. Jacobs responded with enthusiastic agreement, saying, ‘I thought you’d never ask!’

Following their Caribbean wedding, the couple traveled to Baghdad to fulfill Kellie Pickler’s prior commitment to perform for the USO.

She told Clarkson that at every location they stayed, the soldiers had prepared a ‘honeymoon’ suite for them, which she found hilarious.

Although they had a peaceful marriage, appearing on a reality show a few years later might have seemed like an unusual choice. However, Pickler says their reasons for doing it were genuine.

She shared on The Steve Harvey Show in 2015 that she and her husband feel incredibly fortunate and want to make a positive impact on the world, which also led to an appearance on Celebrity Family Feud. She emphasized their desire to enjoy life to the fullest, explaining that simply being alive is not the same as truly living.

The CMT reality show I Love Kellie Pickler followed Kellie Pickler and her husband, Kyle Jacobs, as they navigated life together in Nashville and while traveling with her country music career. The show featured fun, relatable moments, from everyday issues like snoring to quirky fears among their friends.

And there wasn’t a trace of irony to be found anywhere in the show’s title.

In a recent episode, Jacobs explained what he appreciates most about Kellie: her positive outlook. He said she has a great sense of humor and doesn’t get bogged down by life’s little stresses.

The couple went to Japan to finish filming the second season of their show. Pickler explained that she’s dreamed of traveling the world since childhood, and that’s a big reason why she enjoys her work so much.

Growing up in a small town, I was always naturally curious and eager to explore beyond what I knew,” the Albemarle, North Carolina native explained in a 2016 podcast interview with Caroline Hobby. “I’ve always dreamed of traveling the world and meeting people from all walks of life, and I’ve always had a desire to push my own limits.

Pickler emphasized that her views were shaped solely by personal experience and direct observation, explaining she has a deep and ongoing curiosity about people and understanding their motivations.

Catching up with TopMob News in 2022, however, she sang the praises of home.

She described herself as a down-to-earth person who enjoys the simple things in life. She loves gardening, doing puzzles, and having meaningful conversations. Her friends jokingly compare her to a Golden Girl, saying she has the spirit of a 104-year-old in a 35-year-old’s body. Mostly, she just appreciates relaxing on her porch and being surrounded by good friends.

You know, I’ve always believed in finding work you genuinely enjoy, and my SiriusXM show was definitely that for me. But honestly? There was nothing quite like finishing up for the day and heading home. It was the perfect balance – something fulfilling professionally, and a cozy life waiting for me personally.

She explained that she focuses on her work and then goes home to be a wife, friend, and godmother. She values meaningful connections and dislikes being labeled a ‘celebrity’ because it feels impersonal. She actively avoids the superficial aspects of fame, prioritizing a grounded and genuine life, and maintains healthy relationships even with those in the entertainment industry.

Even though she often talked about wanting to travel, that idea actually aligned with what she’d said ten years earlier – she wanted to live a simple life.

She once told Taste of Country that happiness is her definition of success. She’s noticed many people – both in and outside the entertainment industry – who seem to have everything, yet still lack joy. She believes that money and fame aren’t enough; you can have it all and still be unhappy, even crying yourself to sleep. For her, true success isn’t about possessions, but about inner peace.

I’m incredibly proud of how far I’ve come, considering where I started and how I was raised,” she said. “Looking at my husband, I realize he’s everything I need. I get to perform on stage every night, singing songs I love, and I’m more proud of my new album than anything else. Of course, like every artist, I want as many people as possible to hear my music.

Getting to work with her husband through the years was an added bonus.

Honestly, Kyle… he’s everything to me. I told everyone back in 2016 that he’s my safe place, my total sanctuary. He’s not just my husband, he’s my best friend, and I trust him with absolutely everything. I feel so incredibly lucky – truly blessed – to get to live this life with him, my partner in everything. We’re always off on adventures together, and he’s just… my treasure. I can’t imagine going through life without someone to share it all with, and that someone is him.

During a quick question-and-answer segment on a friend’s podcast in 2016, Kellie Pickler said that Kyle Jacobs was what made her happy.

“He’s amazing,” she told me. “He really makes me feel something.” Hobby noted that they seemed to have a truly great connection.

When asked about her goals, Pickler explained she simply wants to spread positivity and bring joy to others. She feels grateful and blessed, enjoying a wonderful life filled with kind and genuine people. Ultimately, she believes everyone is just trying to navigate life and make the best of it.

I’ve been following Charlie Jacobs for years, and I always loved hearing about his songwriting process. He once described his typical day to McPherson Guitars, and it sounded so grounded. He starts with coffee and Cheerios, spends some time with his wife, and then, without fail, he’s writing a song by noon! He says sometimes a song just comes to him instantly – he actually snapped his fingers to illustrate how quickly it can happen. But even if it doesn’t flow that easily, he heads to the studio and really pours himself into his work. He admitted he’s usually completely exhausted by the end of the day, and honestly, that just shows how dedicated he is to his craft.

Creating music can be really demanding, but I’m incredibly grateful for the opportunity. Even now, it’s amazing to me that I get to do this as my job – it’s a true blessing. Looking ahead five or ten years, I just hope I’m still doing what I love.

He mentioned receiving his first custom McPherson guitar as an anniversary gift from his wife. The guitar’s headstock was engraved with their wedding date, January 1st, 2011. He described it as the most beautiful guitar he’d ever seen and played.

Oh my gosh, you will NOT believe this! Remember when Kellie Pickler was on Dancing With the Stars in 2013? It was the week where everyone danced to songs from their best year, and it was just magical. My absolute FAVORITE part? Jacobs, the incredible musician, actually played their wedding song, “Say I Do,” while she danced the rumba! I seriously replay that performance all the time, it was just perfect!

I absolutely love following Jacobs on Instagram! It’s such a fun mix of everything – sweet photos of him and Pickler with their adorable dogs, snapshots of him hanging out with friends, and glimpses into his life as a musician in the recording studio. You get a real feel for his life in Nashville, too. It’s not all polished perfection, though – he’ll even share little, everyday moments, like that hilarious picture of a half-empty Mott’s applesauce jar after he had a craving on his 48th birthday! It’s just… real, and I enjoy seeing it all.

Kellie Pickler, who last released a studio album in 2013 with The Woman I Am, shared with Sounds Like Nashville in 2021 that she and her husband, Kyle Jacobs, had been writing new songs. She explained that Jacobs had been busy with producing, and they were both eager to return to the studio and create music that would be uplifting and supportive for listeners.

Jacobs’ last Instagram post was on February 15, 2023, but he hadn’t shared a photo of his wife, Kellie Pickler, since January 1, 2022. In that post, celebrating their 11th wedding anniversary, he praised her dedication to supporting the military and first responders, emphasizing her commitment to showing them appreciation and love. He ended with a sweet message about their relationship, saying, “She loves me too 🙂 #lovewins.”
