Between Barbarian, Companion and now, Weapons, Zach Cregger is on a bit of a horror hot streak.
Now, the director is moving on to his upcoming adaptation of the Resident Evil video game series.
Furthermore, though many characters are yet to be announced, it’s been verified that one star from the successful series “Weapons” will assume the main character position.
During a chat with Ringer Movies, it was disclosed that Austin Abrams, known for his roles in Euphoria and The Walking Dead, has been chosen to feature in the upcoming film adaptation.
He clarifies that Austin Abrams will be his choice. “Austin is not just any actor; he embodies the role perfectly. Our collaboration has created something extraordinary. It’s a unique, entertaining, and unpredictable tale.
In the movie, Abrams will portray a new character, as confirmed by Creggers. Interestingly, this film is set outside the game’s characters, and since Leon’s tale has been narrated in the games, fans are already familiar with it.
Although Cregger is often commended for his distinctive, arguably intellectual approach to horror movies, he assures us that the Resident Evil film will deviate from this pattern.
He explained that the upcoming film will be quite different from Barbarian and Weapons. Instead, it promises an action-packed, high-energy experience akin to a rollercoaster ride. It’s the kind of movie where you can relax, enjoy the visual spectacle, and let your imagination run wild with the cinematography.
According to a report by The Hollywood Reporter this year, Cregger’s approach is expected to stay true to the original source material of the video games, in an effort to learn from and improve upon past adaptations like Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City which received negative feedback in 2021.
As a hardcore gaming enthusiast, I’ve got to confess, I’ve never caught any of the Resident Evil movies in action. But when it comes to the games? Well, back in the day, I was so hooked that I couldn’t seem to get enough!
The movie doesn’t strive for novelty; instead, it charts a course from one place to another, much like a person’s journey through Hell in real time. This peculiar aspect lies in its immersion, as you descend further and further into the abyss.
It’s truly a heartfelt tribute to the games that I adore. These games are my inspiration.
2026 promises to be an exciting year for fans of Resident Evil, with Cregger’s movie and the release of Resident Evil 9 on the horizon.
