One fascinating “what if” scenarios in contemporary Hollywood cinema circles centers around Quentin Tarantino’s unreleased Star Trek film. Not too long ago, Simon Pegg, who portrayed Scotty in the rebooted series, disclosed some outlandish details about Tarantino’s screenplay for this project.
What did Simon Pegg say about Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek movie?
Over the recent weekend, Pegg participated in a panel discussion at Fan Expo Boston. During this chat, the topic of Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek movie came up. Although Pegg hasn’t read the script yet, he received a summary from J.J. Abrams and producer Lindsey Weber. True to form, Tarantino’s take on Star Trek did not fall short of expectations.
Pegg stated through Collider that it was “absolutely bonkers,” as we often refer to it in our line of work. It was exactly what one would anticipate from a Quentin Tarantino-penned Star Trek script.
In 2017, Quentin Tarantino proposed a mature-rated concept for a Star Trek film to J.J. Abrams and Paramount Pictures. Abrams found the idea appealing and brought together a team of writers to develop it. Subsequently, Mark L. Smith, who had written The Revenant, was recruited to write the screenplay.
As of 2025, Quentin Tarantino’s Star Trek project, which he was originally set to produce and possibly direct (with J.J. Abrams involved), is not currently in the works. Tarantino himself announced in 2020 that he would no longer be directing his Star Trek idea.
It would’ve been intriguing to allow a director such as Tarantino to work on a Star Trek film, an idea that piqued the interest of Pegg.
In a different wording, Pegg expressed that it would have been fascinating to imagine Star Trek as viewed by him. He’s unsure about the fan reception, but it would undoubtedly have been intriguing.
Regarding the eagerly anticipated fourth movie in the Star Trek series set within the Kelvin timeline, Pegg expresses optimism that the recent union between Paramount and Skydance might spark renewed interest in producing the film.
Pegg stated that since David Ellison has risen in rank at Paramount, he’s optimistic about the possibility. With the merger complete and Ellison being a strong advocate for the Kelvin timeline, there might be a chance for another film in the series.
