Angela Sant’Albano expressed her excitement about joining the Resident Evil franchise, highlighting its significant cultural impact and history of powerful female characters. She was eager to not only be part of the series but also to create a unique and original character. Sant’Albano’s character, Grace, provides a fresh perspective for players, experiencing the horrors of Resident Evil with new eyes. Because Grace lacks the years of experience battling the undead and Umbrella’s creations, she brings a more realistic and emotionally driven viewpoint to the game’s world.
To me, making a character believable starts with honesty. With Grace, it was cool building her as an FBI analyst, so she’s got some training, but she’s definitely not a super-soldier. I really wanted to explore what it would be like for an everyday person dropped into this crazy, scary world. We all think we’d be the hero, but honestly? I think most of us would be absolutely terrified sometimes, wanting to just curl up and hide. That’s what I tried to capture with her – that real, human reaction.
Grace has some truly powerful moments where she shows incredible bravery, forcing herself to confront her fears. Kate Saxon, our performance-capture director, constantly emphasized that Grace’s scenes should feel like a horror experience – slow, suspenseful, and unsettling. We always kept that in mind during filming, making sure to pace everything deliberately and fully immerse ourselves in that atmosphere. This creates a nice contrast with Leon’s story, which is much more focused on action.
Within the game’s story, Grace is the daughter of Alyssa Ashcroft, a character players could control in the 2003 game Resident Evil Outbreak. Alyssa, voiced by Sarah Carver, Wendee Lee in Outbreak, and Jane Perry in the new game, plays an important role in Grace’s history. The actress playing Grace, Sant’Albano, studied gameplay footage from Outbreak to understand Alyssa’s character and use that knowledge to shape her performance.
I really enjoyed working with Jane Perry – she’s fantastic! We quickly developed a close, almost mother-daughter-like connection. I’m a huge fan of her. To prepare for the role, I studied Alyssa’s backstory extensively and watched a lot of gameplay footage. I think it’s important for Grace to have experienced something deeply difficult and traumatic – specifically, witnessing her mother’s death and now living with PTSD. Her mother’s research on Raccoon City becomes a major obsession for Grace, and the mystery surrounding her death is a central theme for the character. I believe this trauma is a key reason why Grace decided to join the FBI.
Angela Sant’Albano didn’t share many details about what’s next for her character, Grace, in the game series, but she did mention hoping to work with some other popular characters in future installments. She explained that Grace is unique compared to the other women in the games, and she intentionally avoided basing Grace on any of them. However, she expressed a strong desire to see Grace interact with iconic characters like Jill Valentine and Claire Redfield, whom she admires.
Bringing Resident Evil To Life

Angela Sant’Albano didn’t just provide the voice for Grace Ashcroft in Resident Evil Requiem; she also physically performed the character through motion capture. This gave her significant creative control over how Grace was portrayed, which was a major reason she took on the role. Sant’Albano described it as a completely new experience – her first video game! She recalled her first day involved a tight helmet, bright lights, gloves, and lots of Velcro. Initially overwhelmed, director Kate Saxon helped her reframe it as a theatrical performance in the round – offering freedom like theater, but with the close-up intimacy of film and television. Sant’Albano went beyond just focusing on Grace’s voice; she felt fully immersed in the character and the world, thanks to the studio’s technology that made the performance capture equipment virtually disappear, allowing for a truly authentic performance. She loved the feeling of freedom and the blend of performance styles.
The team at Capcom prioritized performance above all else, and I felt incredibly fortunate to work with people who were always willing to revisit and refine scenes. They truly cared about making everything look and feel its best, and that dedication was remarkable given how complex the project was. Everyone – at Capcom, Imaginary Studios, and with Kate – was deeply invested in the details. It was a truly collaborative experience. I even felt like a kid again, rediscovering my creativity. Unlike performing on a traditional stage where everything is already set up for you, this project required a lot more imagination. Capcom was excellent at communicating their vision, and they created an incredibly realistic and immersive environment.
Angela Sant’Albano, reflecting on Grace’s development in Resident Evil Requiem, shared what initially struck her about the character. When she first reviewed the scenes and discussed the role with Capcom, she focused on Grace’s introverted nature, as they wanted her to be distinct from previous heroines. However, Sant’Albano was most surprised by Grace’s growth throughout the game. Initially, she only saw Grace as shy and somewhat clumsy, though she clarifies Grace isn’t simply scatterbrained – she intensely focuses on things she cares about. Grace begins the game as someone who prefers solitude and is awkward around others, but she gradually forms meaningful connections with those around her, a development that particularly surprised Sant’Albano.
