Masatao Kumazawa, the producer of Resident Evil Requiem, and director Koshi Nakanishi suggested that the game’s planned post-launch minigame could be released after Golden Week. During an interview with Den-Fami Nico Gamer, they also mentioned that a full chapter of the game was removed before it launched.
Nakanishi noted that the recent cuts to the game are similar to what happened with Resident Evil 7 in 2017. He explained (through translation) that Resident Evil 7 also had a chapter removed before launch – a section originally intended to cover the player’s transition from the guest house to the main house. He’s discussed this ‘phantom Chapter 2’ in previous interviews.
Like the recently discovered lost chapter, Resident Evil Requiem once had a similar cut section. The developers removed it during game development to streamline the experience. As they finalized the game’s structure, they made tough choices about what to keep, move, or remove entirely to improve the overall flow.
We don’t usually make big changes right before finishing a project. Instead, we create a basic version first and then improve it through many revisions. It’s surprisingly common for us to even remove whole sections during this process.
It’s understandable that developers might be disappointed if scenes or chapters they worked on are cut. However, Nakanishi believes that if the final game is good, everyone will ultimately be happy with the result.
It’s hard to say where a rumored “Chapter 2” would have fit into the story of Resident Evil Requiem, as the game already flows smoothly from beginning to end. Players control two characters: Leon S. Kennedy, who returns from previous games, and a new character, Grace Ashcroft. Grace’s sections offer classic survival horror gameplay, while Leon’s gameplay is more action-focused, similar to Resident Evil 4 Remake. The game is designed so players experience the same locations from different perspectives, often seeing the results of what the other character has already done.
Nakanishi also discussed a new single-player minigame for Resident Evil Requiem. He explained it will feature combat similar to the main game and is designed for players who want more content after finishing the story. He believes it will be a fun challenge, encouraging players to prepare and look forward to its release.
You can now play Resident Evil Requiem on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2. Read our full review for more information. The game has recently achieved significant sales, prompting Capcom to increase its financial predictions for the year ending March 31st.
