In its latest Spotlight event, Capcom showcased “Resident Evil Requiem,” providing a deep dive into the game’s setting and ideas, although we didn’t see much gameplay. On top of that, producer Masato Kumazawa shared additional insights about the meaning behind “requiem” and its implications for the story on PlayStation Blog.
The title has multiple dimensions: it serves as a lament for Grace Ashcroft, still struggling with her mother’s passing eight years ago, and a lament for everyone impacted by the Raccoon City incident, among other themes. Upon finishing the game, you might discover yet more depth to the subtitle. Furthermore, with director Koshi Nakanishi describing it as a ‘eulogy’ for ‘past characters’, there’s curiosity about whether any significant characters from the past will reappear.
Instead, why choose to go back to Raccoon City? Kumazawa explains that in recent mainline games like “Resident Evil 7” and “Resident Evil Village”, the series has expanded its universe beyond Raccoon City, focusing on events involving the Winters family rather than the city itself.
In ‘Resident Evil Requiem’, our aim was to revisit a tale that advances the larger story connected to Raccoon City and the covert activities of the Umbrella Corporation. Since the series is turning 30, we feel that Raccoon City provides the most suitable backdrop.
Given the lasting impact of the city’s destruction on numerous series titles over the years, the importance of a return cannot be overlooked. The much-anticipated Resident Evil Requiem is set to launch on February 27th, 2026, and has already surpassed one million wishlists, available for Xbox Series X/S, PS5, and PC.
As a thrilled fan, I’m eagerly awaiting August’s Gamescom where I can get my hands on Capcom’s upcoming game, Requiem. However, they’ve yet to confirm if we’ll also receive a free demo prior to its release. What makes this game stand out from previous installments is the versatility it offers – players can switch between first-person and third-person perspectives at any moment. Keep your eyes peeled for further updates in the meantime!
