The western part of the continent is now under Japanese rule, while the eastern and midwestern areas are controlled by a powerful Nazi regime.
The show’s name comes from a mysterious figure known as “The Man in the High Castle,” who gathers newsreels showing alternate versions of Earth. Alexa Davalos plays Juliana Crain, a woman who watches these tapes and starts to doubt her life under Japanese control, ultimately leading her to fight against the government.
The television series differs from the original book by adding the idea of alternate realities. One of these realities shows a world where the Allied forces won World War II, and this is presented through newsreels gathered by a character known as The Man in the High Castle. The title of the book within the story, The Grasshopper Lies Heavy, is where the series gets its name.
Just as old newsreels can inspire resistance against a government, the novel The Grasshopper Lies Heavy – a story within The Man in the High Castle – presents a different version of history where the Allies won World War II. This suggests the possibility of yet another reality where the Nazis were defeated.
