Rip’s OG Future Yellowstone Replacement Character’s New Spinoff Story Teased By Star

Finn Little hints at what’s in store for Carter’s story on Dutton Ranch in season one, and suggests he might follow a path similar to Rip Wheeler (played by Cole Hauser). Created by Chad Feehan and executive produced by Taylor Sheridan, Dutton Ranch will debut with two episodes on Paramount+ on Friday, May 15th.

I was really intrigued when Carter showed up in season four of Yellowstone. It was clear Beth Dutton, played brilliantly by Kelly Reilly, took him under her wing, even though Rip wasn’t thrilled about it at first. Now, with Dutton Ranch, we’re seeing Carter move with Beth and Rip as they head to Texas to build a new life. For years, he was the ranch hand always at the bottom of the ladder at Yellowstone Dutton Ranch, but this new ranch feels like a real chance for him to grow and find new opportunities.

During an interview with Liam Crowley from ScreenRant at the Dutton Ranch press event, Finn Little discussed the future of his character, Carter. He explored whether Carter will follow in Rip’s footsteps or forge his own identity. Little emphasized that Carter is “his own person” and hinted at “a lot of different changes” for him in the first season of Dutton Ranch. Here’s what Finn Little had to say:

ScreenRant asked about the character Carter. When he first appeared in Yellowstone, it seemed like he was developing into someone similar to Rip Wheeler. They wanted to know how Carter has changed while living on the Dutton Ranch and whether he’s still headed down a path to become like Rip.

I definitely see some similarities between Carter and Rip. I think that’s initially what drew Beth to Carter when they first met. However, Carter is ultimately his own person, and a major focus of this season is him figuring out his own path. The season saw a lot of changes for Carter, but I’m pleased with how his story arc concluded.

Rip and Carter have always had a difficult relationship, and Rip initially treated Carter harshly after they met. Despite this, Carter persevered and learned the fundamentals of cowboy life during his two seasons on Yellowstone. He still has a lot to learn, though – especially if he truly wants to become a cowboy like Rip.

When Carter first arrived at the Yellowstone Dutton Ranch with Beth, he seemed like a young teenager. But during the delays in filming season 5 – caused by the pandemic and Kevin Costner leaving the show – actor Finn Little, now 19, grew up considerably. In fact, Kevin Costner’s character, John Dutton, even commented on how much Carter had matured when season 5 began.

Okay, so it looks like the writers are definitely drawing parallels between Carter and Rip Wheeler’s story. Just like Rip, Carter’s going to have a young romance brewing. We’re introduced to Oreana, played by Natalie Alyn Lind, a local girl from Rio Paloma, and let me tell you, she’s got a bit of mystery surrounding her. She’s beautiful, sure, but I have a feeling she’s going to stir up some trouble – definitely a similar vibe to how Beth and Rip first connected on the Dutton Ranch.

While Beth and Rip remain central to the story, Carter is expected to have a more prominent role in Dutton Ranch than he did in Yellowstone. This is a great chance for actor Finn Little to really develop and showcase his portrayal of Carter.

From Finn Little’s point of view, Carter is trying to establish his own identity at the Dutton Ranch, separate from Rip, even if that means embracing the life of a cowboy.
