Thanos in Infinity War and Endgame was a compelling and complex character that fans connected with emotionally after years of following these heroes. This made those films deeply satisfying and created incredibly high expectations that haven’t been met since.
The success of Avengers: Doomsday is crucial, but a lot also depends on Robert Downey Jr.’s performance as Doctor Doom. Fans were excited to see him back in the Marvel Cinematic Universe after loving his role as Iron Man, but they have high expectations for his new villainous character. The upcoming movie presents a unique challenge – both for the film itself and for Downey Jr., who needs to deliver a performance that satisfies audiences following the epic conclusions of Infinity War and Endgame. Ultimately, it’s about connecting with fans emotionally and ensuring they aren’t disappointed.

Starting with Doomsday and continuing forward, there’s a dynamic that specifically addresses the challenge of avoiding disappointment after the massive events of Infinity War and Endgame. We’ve worked incredibly hard to achieve this.
Can Doomsday Live Up to Its Predecessors?
Even with all the excitement surrounding Doomsday – including Robert Downey Jr.’s return to the MCU, a huge cast, and the Russo brothers directing – it faces a tough challenge. Infinity War and Endgame weren’t just great movies; they were massive cultural events that fans still feel strongly about, remembering how they felt watching them in theaters. Those films, especially Infinity War, were incredibly emotional, marking the first time in the MCU where the heroes didn’t easily win. There were real losses, which had a big impact on audiences and raised the bar for all future Marvel films.
Despite all the action and interesting parts of Doomsday, the movie needs to really connect with audiences on an emotional level to succeed. Viewers need to care about the characters and what they’re going through, or the film won’t be as impactful. It seems Robert Downey Jr. understands this, and if he can make us believe in his portrayal of Doom, the rest of the movie has a good chance of becoming another great Marvel Cinematic Universe story.
