Robert Downey Jr’s Sherlock Holmes 3 Finally Gets an Update

As a big fan of Guy Ritchie’s work, I was excited to hear about his new film, In the Grey. During the press for it, someone brought up the Sherlock Holmes movies – the ones with Robert Downey Jr. that started so strong back in 2009. The first one was a massive success, especially coming right after his Iron Man debut. They made a sequel in 2011, Sherlock Holmes: A Game of Shadows, but then Downey Jr. really committed to the Marvel universe, and a third Sherlock Holmes film seemed to stall. Recently, though, Ritchie finally gave an update on Sherlock Holmes 3 during an interview about In the Grey.

Director Guy Ritchie recently told Collider he’s eager to make a third film in the series. He expressed his fondness for working with Robert Downey Jr. and enjoyed making the first two movies. He believes the biggest hurdle is simply finding a time that works for everyone involved, but confirmed there’s mutual interest. He’s surprised a third film hasn’t been made yet, given the apparent demand from fans and the team’s enthusiasm.

What Is Standing in the Way of Sherlock Holmes 3?

The main obstacle to making Sherlock Holmes 3 is Robert Downey Jr.’s busy schedule. While Guy Ritchie has said Downey is enthusiastic about a third film, the actor is currently juggling many commitments as both an actor and producer. Many hoped Downey would have more time for films like Sherlock Holmes after his character, Iron Man, died in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, but that hasn’t happened. Now, he’s returning to the MCU as Doctor Doom in several major Marvel films, including those following Avengers: Endgame. If Doctor Doom remains a prominent character after Avengers: Secret Wars, it will likely further limit Downey’s availability for larger projects like another Sherlock Holmes movie.

The first two Sherlock Holmes movies starring Robert Downey Jr. were huge successes, earning over $524 million and $543 million worldwide, respectively. They offered a different take on the classic detective compared to the BBC’s Sherlock series, which featured Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman. While the BBC show was known for its complex mysteries and sophisticated style, the Downey and Jude Law films focused on the excitement and adventure of Holmes’s detective work.

Guy Ritchie has a lot on his plate right now. He’s currently filming the action thriller In the Grey with Henry Cavill, Jake Gyllenhaal, and Eiza González, and also working on a crime drama called Wife and Dog featuring Benedict Cumberbatch, Rosamund Pike, and Anthony Hopkins. Plus, he’s an executive producer on the Prime Video series Young Sherlock, which stars Hero Fiennes Tiffin as a 19-year-old Sherlock Holmes attending Oxford University.
