I’ll never forget the 80s – it was when Robin Williams really took off! Before that, he’d been doing smaller parts in things like Can I Do It… ‘Til I Need Glasses? and shows like The Richard Pryor Show and Happy Days, but 1980’s Popeye was his big break. From there, he just kept knocking it out of the park with amazing performances in films like The World According to Garp and Good Morning, Vietnam. And one movie from that decade, a true 80s classic, is still one of his most famous – and the good news is, you can stream it on Hulu now!
You can currently watch Dead Poets Society on Hulu, where it’s been available since March 1st. This critically acclaimed 1989 film, directed by Peter Weir, takes place at the strict Welton Academy in the 1950s, where students are expected to conform. Robin Williams plays John Keating, an inspiring teacher who encourages his students to think for themselves, question tradition, and live life to the fullest through poetry. Featuring early performances by Ethan Hawke and Robert Sean Leonard, Dead Poets Society was a major box office success, earning $235 million and winning an Academy Award for its original screenplay.
Robin Williams’ Dead Poets Society Is a Landmark Coming-Of-Age Film
The 1980s produced many memorable teen movies, and Dead Poets Society is considered one of the best, alongside films like The Breakfast Club and Back to the Future. The movie beautifully portrays the confusing and sometimes difficult experience of growing up, telling a timeless story about resisting pressure to conform. Robin Williams’ performance as Keating, a teacher who encourages his students to think independently and question tradition, is particularly strong. The film’s message of seizing the day continues to inspire both the characters within the story and audiences watching it.
As a huge fan, I always say Dead Poets Society just defines the coming-of-age genre. It really gets into what it’s like being young, figuring things out, and dealing with the pressure to fit in – and watching the characters grow is so powerful. Even after all these years, it’s still one of Robin Williams’ best performances, in my opinion. And the numbers back it up! It has an 85% ‘Certified Fresh’ score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, making it one of his top-rated films. What’s even cooler is that audiences love it too, giving it a 92% rating – tying it with An Evening with Robin Williams and Aladdin as his second-highest-rated movie with viewers.
What’s New on Hulu?
Hulu is adding a bunch of new movies this March, including favorites like Dead Poets Society, Cast Away, Finding Nemo, and Juno. Other new additions include Dodgeball: A True Underdog Story, Memoirs of a Geisha, Raising Arizona, and Are You There God? It’s Me, Margaret. More films will be added throughout the month, with King Ivory arriving on March 20th, the new Garfield movie on March 21st, and Dangerous Animals on March 31st.
