A recent report from People Make Games reveals that Rockstar Games fired 34 employees as part of an effort to discourage unionization. This happened shortly after the company updated its internal Slack policy in October, significantly reducing the number of channels available for communication among staff.
As reported by People Make Games, Rockstar Games removed some internal communication channels, leaving employees with no official way to connect about non-work topics. This change, called “the Slack purge,” led employees to reactivate a Discord server originally created in 2022. They are now using it as a space for union members to discuss working conditions at Rockstar Games.
Okay, so the report basically shows this Discord channel was only about work stuff and union organizing. That totally throws a wrench in what the studio said about firing people for “bad behavior” and leaking secrets publicly. They’re claiming that, but it looks like the Discord was just where we were talking about things at work, not sharing anything confidential.
Former Rockstar Games employees have been protesting the company’s recent firings, working with the Independent Workers Union of Great Britain (IWGB). In an interview this month, one former employee explained that being labeled as having committed “gross misconduct” by Rockstar is harming their ability to find new work.
The employee explained that having a record of serious misconduct on their resume would severely harm their future job opportunities. They also described the deep shame and disappointment of being dismissed in this way, emphasizing that everyone wants to keep their job and complete their work. The lasting stigma of this misconduct, they said, is difficult to put into words.
IWGB representatives have criticised Rockstar Games’ decision to let employees go, claiming it was an attempt to discourage union activity. They are calling on company leaders to be more responsible and fully comply with UK employment laws.
The organiser stated that the dismissals were handled unfairly, with no proper process or evidence used. The IWGB is demanding the company take responsibility for its actions and commit to following UK employment law going forward.
The next steps are now with Rockstar Games,” said the organizer. “We’ve officially filed our legal claim and are waiting for their response. We’re hoping for a friendly resolution, but frankly, this situation is unacceptable and quite shocking. In my 20 years of experience with UK trade unions – and within the gaming industry – I’ve never encountered anything like this. Now it’s up to Rockstar to fix it.”
