A new Joker and Harley Quinn movie could be happening at DC Studios.
In December 2024, James Gunn and Peter Safran debuted their DC Universe with the introduction of Creature Commandos. This was followed by Gunn’s Superman film, while Season 2 of Peacemaker is set to premiere next month. In the year 2026, we can expect the arrival of Lanterns, Supergirl, and Clayface.
What do we know about the Joker & Harley Quinn rumor?
Based on reports from source Daniel Richtman, filmmaker Zach Cregger – known for his work on Weapons and Barbarian – has penned a screenplay for a potential Joker and Harley Quinn film, which he plans to propose to director James Gunn.
This is only a rumor at this time, as there’s been no official announcement about any such project.
Cregger has, however, said before that he wrote a script for a project set in Gotham City.
Back in 2022, when I shared with ComicBook a tale penned by me prior to the release of ‘Barbarian’, there was another script I couldn’t help but adore – one set in the iconic city of Gotham. Surprisingly enough, this may be my favorite piece I’ve ever written! As for its future, it remains a mystery; I haven’t had any discussions about it with Warner Bros. or DC. Here’s hoping that someday, I’ll get to share this story with the world.
So far, there’s been no official word on Joker or Harley Quinn’s roles within the DCU; however, plans can always change. Interestingly, Gunn mentioned that initially, they hadn’t intended to create a Clayface movie, but after Mike Flanagan submitted a script for it, things changed.
As a dedicated film enthusiast, I’d be thrilled if the rumors about Cregger’s Joker and Harley Quinn movie are true, but it’s important to remember that just because DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures give the green light doesn’t mean it would automatically fall under the DC Universe. It could potentially be woven into Matt Reeves’ expansive Batman Crime Saga Epic or even exist as an entirely separate universe, given Gunn’s past interest in Elseworld projects. The possibilities are intriguing!
