As a huge fan of the original Gladiator, I was a little disappointed with the sequel, and Russell Crowe seems to think I wasn’t alone. He’s said that the new movie didn’t quite hit the same way because it was missing that strong sense of right and wrong – that ‘moral core’ – that made Maximus’s journey so compelling. It’s a good point – the first film really resonated because it felt like it had something important to say.
The actor, famous for winning an Academy Award for his role as the Roman general Maximus in the 2000 film Gladiator, wasn’t in the new 2024 sequel. This time, the story followed Lucius, a character played by Paul Mescal.
At the Taormina Film Festival, Russell Crowe discussed what made the first film so successful, explaining that he felt its heart came from Maximus’s strong and constant love for his wife and child, even after their deaths.
He remembered pushing back against requests from the studio to include sex scenes for Maximus, believing they would distract from the character’s main motivations.
I really had to fight for my vision, getting letters and pushback from all sides, but I refused to budge. Thankfully, Ridley agreed with me – he understood that what I was advocating for was truly at the heart of the film’s message.
Interestingly, the second film aimed to undermine the strong moral foundation established in the first. Despite this, and being released 20 years later, it earned almost the same amount at the box office.
They didn’t succeed because they overlooked the underlying principles that made the original idea work, and they didn’t account for how the value of money had changed. Essentially, they lacked an understanding of the core values that drove its initial success.

The first Gladiator film was incredibly successful with both critics and audiences, earning five Oscars – including awards for Best Picture and Russell Crowe as Best Actor.
Scott directed the sequel to Gladiator, bringing back Connie Nielsen and Derek Jacobi from the first film. The new cast features Paul Mescal, Denzel Washington, Pedro Pascal, Joseph Quinn, and Fred Hechinger.
The story continues with Lucius, Lucilla’s now-adult son, who is thrust into the Colosseum and becomes entangled in a fight for Rome’s destiny.
Gladiator II earned $462.2 million globally, with $172.4 million coming from North American theaters and $289.7 million from international markets. The first Gladiator movie made a total of $465.5 million worldwide – $187.7 million domestically and $277.8 million internationally – over its entire run. The original film cost about $103 million to produce, while Gladiator II’s production budget was significantly higher at $250 million.
