Sabrina Carpenter Addresses Her Reaction to Cultural Call at Coachella

Sabrina Carpenter wishes she didn’t say this.

I was honestly so disappointed to hear that James Bay called out a fan for making a traditional Arabic celebratory sound – a ‘Zaghourta’ – during her Coachella set. It’s such a beautiful expression of joy! I was relieved when she quickly apologized for what she said onstage, but it still stung a little. It’s amazing to see artists connect with fans, and it would be even better if everyone understood and appreciated different cultural expressions.

I didn’t get a good look or clear sound, so I’m sorry if my reaction seemed confused or sarcastic,” Sabrina posted on X on April 11. “I didn’t mean any harm, and I realize now I could have responded better!”

“Now I understand what a Zaghrouta is,” she said. “From now on, I happily accept any cheers or yodels!”

The zaghrouta, a celebratory ululation frequently performed by women in the Middle East and North Africa, is often heard at events like weddings and parties.

Before beginning her song “We Almost Broke Up Again Last Night” at the Indio Valley music festival on April 10th, the Grammy-winning artist was at the piano when a sound came from the crowd.

In videos shared online, Sabrina said she thought she heard yodeling and asked if someone was doing it, adding that she didn’t enjoy the sound.

The fan clarified that the ululation was part of her Arabic culture.

“I don’t like it,” the 26-year-old replied. “That’s your culture is yodeling?”

After someone explained it was just a celebratory gathering, Sabrina asked, confused, “Is this Burning Man? What’s happening? This is strange.”

Before taking the stage to finish off the first day of Coachella, the singer of “Taste” talked about how she got ready for the show.

In a recent interview with Perfect published on April 7th, she described the show as her most ambitious project yet. She also shared that it gave her more time to discuss the show’s development than she’s ever had before.

Usually, rehearsals start very quickly, but this time we began preparing about seven months ago. It’s been a lengthy process, and it’s going to be a really special performance.

Sabrina’s performance was a hit, captivating the audience with a vibrant show featuring glamorous costumes, energetic dancers (including nuns!), and classic cars. She also surprised everyone with special appearances by Will Ferrell and Samuel L. Jackson.
