As a big fan of the Star Wars universe, I was surprised to hear that Gina Carano, who played Cara Dune in The Mandalorian, might be coming back! It’s been five years since she was let go after a lot of public discussion, but apparently there’s a new development. I really enjoyed her character, appearing in seven episodes over the first two seasons, before they sort of just wrote her out by sending Cara Dune off to join a special forces unit. It’s a shame, and it reminded me of those classic TV moments where characters just vanish – like Chuck Cunningham from Happy Days or Ben, Ross’ son, on Friends. It’s a common trope, but always a little disappointing when it happens to a character you like!
Gina Carano was fired in February 2021 due to controversial posts on social media, which the studio deemed offensive. This led to a public lawsuit in 2024, financially supported by Elon Musk, that was eventually resolved in 2025. Now, according to Variety, Carano might be returning to Disney. A Disney spokesperson stated they are looking for ways to collaborate with Carano again. While details are scarce, it’s been reported that she’s already had positive conversations with Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau, and she described the meeting as “really nice,” hinting that a return could be possible.
Star Wars Canceled Gina Carano’s Future
Given that The Mandalorian and Grogu’s story is continuing soon, it’s uncertain how Cara Dune could reappear in the Star Wars universe. Although plans existed for a fourth season of The Mandalorian before the project shifted towards a movie, LucasFilm seems committed to a larger story arc culminating in a film focused on Thrawn. However, this ongoing storyline does create a potential opportunity for Dune to join the fight against Thrawn at some point in the future.
Gina Carano had discussed the possibility of returning to the Star Wars universe and her talks with Dave Filoni and Jon Favreau. She described a positive Zoom call with them after the lawsuit was settled, noting that it felt like no time had passed. Filoni is now leading Star Wars, and Favreau jokingly asked during the call where they should pick up the conversation, acknowledging the time that had passed since they last spoke.
It’s not exactly clear when these conversations happened, but they took place after the settlement, possibly as early as 2025. This makes a return to the Star Wars universe for Gina Carano’s character less surprising. Could we see her and Grogu back in a new story? Maybe she’ll return with Paul Sun-Hyung Lee’s character, Carson Teva, who has taken on a similar role? Or will fans of Cara Dune have to wait for a project that comes after the next The Mandalorian and Grogu story?
